A cryptocurrency without past has no future
Not a quote at all

Bitcoin, the great-grandfather of all coins, begin its work on September 3 of 2009. And it has no competitors for almost five years. But everything ruins sometime, and monopoly of bitcoin ended in year 2014 with the release of Ethereum, however, it seems to be blockchain build platform rather than a currency. Despite this, it’s the second most popular coin, so people do buy it very often. After solving the problem how to buy, most of the investors facing problem: where to keep? Using ethereum for quite long time I have tried lots of different options of wallets and I can highly recommend you try learn more about everything you will find in this thread, so you can be sure which wallet is safe and which is scam.

Keep your money $afe
Lot’s of beginners makes the same mistake: they keep their coins, where they bought it. On online-wallet or exchanger, which aren’t safety places.

The best Ethereum wallets in year 2018

To begin with, let’s notice what types of wallets are there:
  • Hardware wallet. Physical wallets that look like a flash flash drive and where all data are kept encrypted. Keeping your cryptocurrencies on such devices is as safety as keeping them in gringotts bank. They can’t also be stolen by hackers, because they are in
  • Web wallets. Your coins are kept on the web server. Although companies that provides such service are worried about the security, more and more hackers are trying to steal private keys. You can also use web wallets on different platforms.
  • Desktop wallet. You download special wallet program and then use it only at one device, however, the keys are also kept in the only place, what makes it pretty safe.
  • Paper wallets. Piece of paper with both, public and private key printed on it. You can put such wallet into the safe. In case you lose it you lose all of your money as well. What is more, there aren’t many well generators for Ethereum, and some of them can even be scams.
And now we're ready to talk about the best wallet options.

Ledger nano

Because of its quality, this hardware wallet is the most popular in the world. It looks like a simple flash drive and can offer you to easily keep ETH, BTC, ETC, Zcash and more coins in very safe place.

When you use it for the first time you have to set the pin code. After this you will get core with 24 words, which will be used for creating private keys.

To check the balance or some other info you can put this wallet into computer.

How hardware wallets work
The idea is simple: you have your hardware wallet and website. If you want to make a transaction, you go on the website and do it. But then you need to confirm the transaction via the hardware wallet. Private keys are kept in this small piece of metal, so you have nothing to worry about.

If swindler want to steal your money, he needs both, access to hardware wallet and to the website, what makes it the safest.

Trezor

Another popular hardware wallet which was designed only for bitcoin, but soon begin supports Ethereum. You can find it as competitor of Ledger, but in fact, Ledger is better almost in everything, however, it cost $15 more.

You can also find a review and a small instruction of using Trezor wallet here

Coinbase

Probably your journey into the cryptoworld began from this platform - we all started with it. Before the service supported only bitcoin, but sometime it started support the ethereum as well.

It’s web wallet, what means that you have no access to the private key. On one side, you have no chance to do something wrong and sequently lose all your money, on the other hand, this service because of the amount of money they keep is being attacked by hackers frequently. The other big problem is that coinbase may not work in your country and it requires your passport data for full access.

For keeping big money in cryptocurrencies you should use hardware wallets, but for keeping some small sums coinbase will be great. The easy registration and friendly interface makes it the best solution for beginners.

MyEtherWallet

Although Coinbase is good for beginners, not all the people are such. MEW can become better solution for you, because of the bigger functionality. It gives you full control of your private keys, that are kept on your computer, and this is the selling point of this wallet.

What is more, MEW gives you an opportunity to create smart contracts or keep your money on the hardware wallet and use the platform to create transactions.

Jaxx

A multi-platform and multi-coin wallet, which also supports Ethereum. It works on Windows, OS X, Linux, Android, IOS and has a chrome extension. It’s the biggest feature of this wallet.

This wallet can offer you very simple interface and big amount of functions, so if you only begin your path through cryptocurrencies you should better use Coinbase or Jaxx, however, the bigger potential of the last one makes it even better.

Among this potential I mean, that all of your keys are kept on your device, what makes it much safier. Also, it doesn’t require document verification, how Coinbase does, it’ll be big advantage for crypto-anarchists or those, who’d like to save their privacy.

It’s also sort of open-source project, so if you know how to code, you can look through it and learn how it works, on the other hand, it makes the project more reliable and more aimed at their users, however, only part of the soft is opened for people, the most important of it is kept in secret to prevent problems with fakers.

Mist

The safest wallet you can imagine, it’s event recommended to use on the Ethereum official website. The wallet is still in beta testing, so while using it, you can face lots of problems, however, ways to solve the most common of them are described at the Mist page on github.

Mist saves your data via special password that you set when you’re installing the wallet, and this keyword can not be changed.

It offers you complete privacy, it requires no personal data and no document verification. It also gives you full control of your private keys.

Metamask

Not a wallet, but it’s a browser extension that gives you an opportunity to run Ethereum dApps in your browser, without downloading all Ethereum nodes. At the same time, you’re still able to make transactions and set smart-contracts.

Now it supports only Chrome and Brave browser, but in the nearest time it will also work with Firefox and some others.

Your private data are encrypted and kept in local storage of the browser, so Metamask has no access to them.

Because metamask is web wallet, there are some risks, you wouldn’t face using desktop or mobile ones. There is a low probability of viruses, however, using a special web antivirus is enough to be sure you’re safe.

Advices. Very helpful advices

If you’re new to the cryptoworld, but you still need secure wallet, choose it using these parameters:
  • Private keys. As password for your bank account it’ll be better if you are the only person who knows it, however, lots of services don’t give you access to keys
  • Developers. Ethereum develops very quickly, so developers have to learn and practise something everyday, while you have to pay attention to wallet’s team
  • User-friendly interface. Find wallet which is easy to navigate. Another big advantage is when wallet is the multiplatform one.
  • Safety and backup. Minimize the human risks. Don’t be like those guys who have through their computer with bitcoins away and now looking for them at the dump. If you use hardware wallet, always backup!
