The European Consumer Organization (BEUC) has accused Google of violating the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Experts say that the Internet giant monitors its users. According to the report, Google uses "trickery", forcing users to connect functions related to the tracking system. Here is what BEUC has published on its website:

“Location data can tell a lot about a person, including his religion (visiting churches), political views (appearing in places of actions and protests), health (regular visits to hospital) or sexual orientation (visiting certain bars)” .

This report shows what ploys Google is using, forcing users not to turn off these tracking functions and not explaining them directly what the consequences may be. BEUC claims that it uses six main methods to trick users into Google.

  • Hidden default setting: When you create a Google account, the authentic settings of your account are hidden behind additional clicks. In order to see these settings and find out whether they are activated or not, users must first click on Advanced Options. Web & App Activity is automatically activated, which means that users who do not activate Advanced Options will not know that Google is collecting these data.

  • Misleading and inaccurate information: When the user is shown the Location History and Web & App Activity options, he sees only a few positive examples of how these data are used. In addition, the information shown to the user often contains only the most basic information about what exactly Google is tracking and how it uses these data.

  • User-confusing sequence of settings: Although the Location History must be activated manually, the setting process is designed in such a way that the user is forced to enable this function.

  • Constant annoying reminders: Users are constantly asked to activate the Location History in various situations. As for Android devices, users who do not want to activate the Location History must reject this option at least four times in various applications pre-installed on Android phones: Google Assistant, Google Maps, Google and Google Photos.

  • Combining various services together and the impossibility of individual setting: In the Google services system, separate functions or services are integrated into each other or simply combined into one package. You will have to activate the Location History if you want to use such services as Google Assistant or Google Photos Places, for example.

  • After activation, this function remains permanently connected: When connected, the Location History is always activated on your Android devices, even if you are not using a service that requires this option. Total Surveillance: What the Internet knows about you (and what to do about it)

BEUC complaints have already been submitted to state authorities that monitor compliance with the General Data Protection Regulations. If it turns out that Google has violated these requirements, a company may be fined 4% of its total revenue. Based on data from 2017, the amount of this fine could exceed $ 4 billion.
