Well it's definitely debatable as whether or not silver is a viable investment medium.
It's all speculation on how the prices will go; take a look at the Wikipedia article about Silver being an Investment - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_as_an_investment
From 1990 to now, the price of silver per ounce has gone up about 300% (3 Times).
Year - Dollars / oz
1990 4.17
2000 4.60
2005 8.83
2006 12.62
So if you wanted to invest in silver I would recommend doing it in the pure bullion, not jewelry; this way you know it's pure and standardized in weight.
Who knows, maybe silver will go up another 300% in a decade and a half, maybe more, maybe less.
You could also wait and observe any trends, maybe it will hit a low spot again; but the best thing you can do before making a decision is to be as informed as possible - knowledge truly is power!

Invest in oil. It's gone up % wise in the past 5 years what silver has taken decades to. World powers will be fighting wars for oil for decades to come.

Silver is a good long term investment IMO, it's logical to go up because there's a set reserver of silver across the world and it is heavily used for industrial purposes , not only jewelery. Increased demand=increased price. But you should invest in pure bullion as already noted, not in jewelery.

DEnnis,
Why not sell it to the local coin shop? Or NWT Mint. Their buy price for silver rounds is $17.17 today.

Thanks for the link here, I have saved it to my favorites. We have many solid silver coins and some collectable silver coins as well. At this point though I may be more interested in buying than selling given the market now. This is an interesting video on the topic. I see links here, so assume ok as long as not promoting anything. youtube.com/watch?v=FOKn7tiUMyc&feature=related#

I agree. I used to have a lot of silver a few years back. Don't know why I ever sold it. Accumulating silver coins is pretty fun and you can accumulate quite a few coins for a small investment or through different programs.

Aren't you in a good silver program, Ken? Another good way to do some accumulating. Bruce had a few collectable silver coins we inherited appraised and they were over 1K in value. We have a lot of others my dad have accumulated that I inherited. I have a safe in the house, but never lock it - that does a lot of good. Better start locking it - I just now thought what if Eric is hunting for change and thinks they are just quarters.

Yes Denise I am in a good silver program. In fact, I am in 2 good silver programs. I joined under Hula in both and am very happy I did.
My mother passed on a box of coins she had collected to my son. We never have had them appraised. We should do that just to see....

From: Gold World article titled "Silver Investing Outlook"
Hi-Ho Silver, Away!
Since the beginning of 2008, silver spot prices have increased from $14.86 an ounce to as high as $21.349.
This represents an impressive 44% increase, or over twice gold's 20% year-to-date gain.
In a Gold World article titled "Silver Investing Outlook," we pointed out that global silver demand is expected to exceed supplies this year, despite an expected surge in mine production and lower fabrication demand.
Much of the bidding will come in the form of investor demand, as speculators ramp up buying the monochromatic metal this year as an additional hedge against inflation and the falling US dollar through physical and ETF investment. We expect this deterioration of silver's supply-demand fundamentals to be the driving factor for prices in 2008.
"How high will silver prices go by the end of this bull cycle?" is the $64,000 question. Of course, we've heard the über-bullish predictions of silver reaching $400 an ounce, $500 an ounce, and even $871.38 an ounce. And while I can appreciate the excitement and zeal that these fellows have for gold's closest relative, I believe that there's really little to no chance of silver prices increasing to those levels in the foreseeable future.
However, if we consider the average gold/silver price ratio and the inflation-adjusted highs of the last metals bull market as meaningful tools to help determine the top for silver this time around, we see that silver prices have a good chance of reaching over $50 an ounce, and could even soar over $150. These estimates represent an approximate 250% to 650% increase from current levels.
$50 an Ounce... Are You Investing in Silver Yet?

Past performance does not predict further performance.
But it keeps on rising.
I think it's a risky investment.

I would say yes, if you can buy it at a good price. I buy it in the form of coinage and sterling flatware. Check your local auction listings for sales that may have these types of silver items. Sometimes you can get these items far below spot price at auctions. This way if the price of silver drops you may not lose money.

Silver is a great investment. Remember you can collect small amount every month as your budget allows. After a few months, you will have many coins on hand. After a few years, now you really have something to look forward to. Remember that coins can increase in value at a much greater rate then the silver itself. Keep them in a safe place, don't handle them and they will be worth much more then many other coins that simple are play things to some people. Look around and see what some coins sell for after a few years.
Start small and stick with it. These programs allow you to really invest in your long term future and have something to hold on to.
Silver coins make great gifts also for your friends and family that are hard to buy for!

Silver is where it's going to be at....the US DOLLAR is going nowhere but down ,down down.

With the advent of all the volatility in commodities now, I think any precious metals are necessary staples.

I am expecting my first coin in next month, I plan on ordering a lot more this year. If I could just afford gold I would order, but alas, not enough funds as of now.

The time is right for collecting Silver. The price is right.
Gold is much too high at this time.

Silver is not really an " investment " ... but it's real currency , and it will hold it's value , unlike our crappy fiat money that we use each day.

Hi everyone, my name is Darcy Cardinal, and this is my first post on MMG! This site looks very good, and talks about the things i like to talk about.
For me personally, i think that the currency debasement and the way the world is general is going, warrants investment into silver and gold. For myself i have already made the commitment to invest into silver, and later gold once my other investments pick up. Right now, i am in the process of learning more about precious metals before actually buying, and also taking a look back on investing, money and stock history, so i can get a clearer picture of how the cycles work. While i do strongly believe in some of the talk about currency crises in the next 10 years, i think it is best to be educated instead of taking everyone elses advice.
At anyrate, thanks for opening up this thread, look forward to the comments!

For those who don't like to label Silver as an investment...
Three years ago, the Silver Eagle Coin was $8.00 an ounce.
Today it's over $20.00.
Wow, a 250% return in 3 years or a 83% return yearly.
Call it whatever you want.

Yes, the fundamentals look remarkably good for both gold and silver, as long as the FED keeps printing fiat currency. I got in at $12 spot silver, and am involved in a precious metals leveraged program. The trustworthy company I am involved with has no referral program, but email me from my site in the sig below if you are interested in this remarkable road to profitability. I will give you my trader's name and 800 number.

Silver is best for investing because of its fluctuation.

Go to your nearest refinery and sell your silver or go to a search engine site and look for refiners in your area.

Silver is almost at par with gold. It is a hedge against inflation. Nowadays, it is being used in the computer hardware industry.
Try selling your gold and buying silver at the right moment and monitor its value fluctuations.

Another way to invest in silver is via the casino (stock market)
You could purchase shares of SLV or trade the options (calls or puts)
Fairly tricky but can be done if your careful about it.
Rare silver coins are good for long term investment strategy.
Put those in a safe deposit box for your children someday.

Why you have invested in silver, I never have invested in the silver as it is always undervalued and it is difficult to sale, but easy to buy.
Better to invest in Gold or if you have good money to invest then better to look for some other lucrative ideas and sectors where you can invest your money and can get good returns from those investments.
I really do not advise any body to invest in silver but to invest in real estate, in business, stock, mutual funds, bio diesel production , etc.
Next time think twice to invest any where, better to consult a good investment consultant who will guide you where to invest so that you can get best returns.

If it is for long term, it will be very profitable.
My opinion : if in HYIP you should invest money you afford to lose,
in Silver, use only your money which is not urgent

There are many ways to invest in silver but if the economy
does crash in the US then there will be a rush to the banks
and people will try to take out their funds. This will cause panic
and the banks will simply close their doors. If you are keeping
your wealth stored in a safety deposit box at the bank, you will not be able to
access it.
The best way to store silver is to take physical possession and keep it with you
at home in a safe. When the crisis starts, there's going to be chaos.
Regards,
Richard
