Should College be Free
Despite the fact I pay my rent off financial aid, no, college definitely should not be free.
well not sure it should be free, but having just sent my oldest son off to college, i sure wish it was free
If they were going to make it free, why wouldn't they also make it mandatory, just like high school?
I would rather not have college ever be free since it will encourage people to go. I dont want that, because I need more people to serve me food, and learn a trade rather than most things people go to school to learn.
I voted yes so that we can have more higher education people.

I agree with Kris People wouldnt treat college seriously Or even less seriously than most take it now. It would be a second high school The 25 - 45,000 a year wouldn't be there to motivate the people. To me, that would be a good reason to continue to stay focused. I would almost guarantee that grade would drop and such if this happened. And, there isn't control on degrees. Would you want hoodlums and slackers being Doctors, Dentists, OBGYN's? Just my thoughts. I vote no. It should remain an expense RS QUOTE(RisingSun @ Aug 27 2006, 12:27 AM) Would you want hoodlums and slackers being Doctors, Dentists, OBGYN's? My point is... Without being mean... Not everyone in the world is a good person. There are many many people I trust in the world with my body, my personal privacy, and my health / well being. There are many many others that I don't. Sometimes it's good for certain things to be more exclusive.
It's already been proven that the majority of college graduates don't get better jobs than non college graduates, so i think it would be nice if college was free. It would produce more educated people and we'd still have plenty of people to do the smaller jobs.
I dont think college should be free. I think a high school education gives people a good enough education to survive. Anything after HS, I think people should have to work for.
QUOTE(BlueXInvest @ Aug 27 2006, 03:43 AM) College should defenitely be free, the government should provide free college education for everyone.. who cares if they tax us more! It's beneficial to our society! That's another issue. Why should we have to pay more taxes so that other people can get an education. It may be where I live / house, etc. but we're paying school taxes well over 10,000. I could only imagine it if we supported Colleges too. It's money that could best be spent on other things. Necessities even. Imagine how it will affect those not well off, and those who can't spare the money? It's an unrealistic, unneeded thought. People need to work for their higher education. The money's worth it. Heck, if people are going to treat it like high school, and possibly slack off, then it's just more tax money wasted.
Hey, let's compromise. We'll have a rebate program. You pay your tuition and expenses up front. If you graduate without having been a slacker and get a job in your major, then you get a partial of full refund.

Speaking from experience tons of jobs would never show their faces without a degree. It opens up tons of opportunity. Granted, there are few who can get filthy rich with a genius idea or product but 99% of people are better off getting a degree if they want to be successful in a monetary way in their lifetime. We have option for free college, but a very, very high demands to fulfill, to get a chance at all. And you must really proove yourself as student, to keep benefit. I know a lot who have book smarts but you put them in the street and they're so lost. But that's what college is for right? Supposed to get you a good job and all that stuff and make it possible for you to get a promotion in your company. Yet only a small percentage get those jobs.

well,
the way it works over here in Ireland is, you are means tested on your parents income or if you are an independent person your are means tested on your own income! if you are eligible, you get your fees paid, plus about €500 for every month in college! obviously, this depends on how much you earn! the more you earn the less you get! I think the system should be introduced all around the world! at least then it gives everybody the chance to attend college that may not be able to afford it!
College Should be Free, they can pay for it with the money they would save on welfare and prisons and people would also make more and then pay more taxes also

I didn't know that in the US there wasn't free college.
In Brazil we have paid colleges and the free government colleges, which, in a funny way, usually have way better quality than the private ones. Of course, to enter in a public college takes a lot of study and effort. But I've managed to do so QUOTE(Viperguy @ Aug 28 2006, 01:45 PM) I didn't know that in the US there wasn't free college. if u dont want college a place where people do nothing, then say u need to keep a GPA of something. Also maybe put a limit on it of say 4 years for a standard degree. Also they could still keep the adminison policy of u need these grades to get in

It should be free to those who qualified with some test.
In the US those who can't afford it college IS free for them. I do not believe college should be free for everyone.
As a college student myself, it annoys the crap out of me to see kids there, who don't want to be there, moaning and complaining about how their mommy and daddy made them go. They bring NOTHING to the college community with their crappy attitudes and stupid high school games. They make the class more difficult by constantly being jerks, coming unprepared, and skipping classes. Instructors get tired of this too - and they see it so much that they take it out on the ones that actually stay for the whole class. Last month, for summer session, my class was 8 weeks long and when it started, had 50 people in there. By the end of those 8 weeks, there were 13 people in the class. How many other people, who wanted to actually be in that class because they NEEDED it were turned a way because it was so packed with dropouts.? If you want a college degree, I think you should pay for it yourself. Doesn't that contradict your statement then? Not talking about the not applied part. More than a cutoff could be a few cents and those few cents don't change the situation. There are way too many guidelines in place that do keep some people out and then those who don't want to go get a free ride. I'm not sure I see where I'm contradicting myself but they have to draw the line somewhere. If they didn't then how would they determine who gets help and who doesn't? Writing skills? Race? Religion? It's easier to generalize people by how much money they make. Don't get me wrong, I do think people who WANT to go should get help, but I don't think it should be free for EVERYONE. I think someone who wants to be a doctor, dentist, teacher should have to pay for their degrees. It's easy to tell who is taking their classes seriously - those that pay for it themselves and those that don't.
But that is not always true and that's where the line comes in.

Geometry? There's a lot he can teach his hoes after that class..........
