I personally think its a washed up way to get back into things, but at the same time a smart move to make a quick bang to get noticed again.

As for best bands from back in the day.. GunsNroses is up there, and I used to be a big ACDC fan myself.. Highway to Hell

As for nowadays..... My favorite is a finish band called HIM ....... Amazing!!!
