HIS expletive-ridden tirade on a Hong Kong bus irked millions around the world after another passenger uploaded his camera-phone footage of it onto the Internet.

But three men may have taken their anger at the now-infamous 'Bus Uncle' too far. He was beaten viciously in a Hong Kong restaurant yesterday.

Mr Roger Chan, 50, was attacked and beaten by three masked men in front of horrified diners and staff at the western restaurant where he started work on Monday, reported Hong Kong's The Sun.

It was Mr Chan's first job in more than 10 years, which he was offered after the six-minute video made headlines around the world.

The three men stormed in, made a comment about Mr Chan's mother, then kicked and punched him.

Bus Uncle Roger Chan was beaten up by two masked men. A third man joined in the attack soon after.

Mr Chan managed to struggle free, with blood flowing down his face, and push one of his attackers into a corner. The three men then backed off and fled.

Mr Chan was later treated for head and eye injuries.

It is the latest in a series of events that have made Mr Chan a familiar face to Net surfers around the world.

It began in late April, when the clip of Mr Chan's verbal lashing of a fellow bus passenger was posted on video-sharing website YouTube.com.

VERBAL BASHING

In the video, the young passenger - later identified as real estate agent Elvis Ho, 23 - taps Mr Chan on the shoulder and asks him to speak more softly into his handphone.

Mr Chan turns around and launches into a stream of Cantonese expletives.

In face of the onslaught, the young man repeatedly apologises and says that the matter is settled.

Mr Chan's reply, 'Not settled yet! Not settled yet!', has become a catchphrase in cyberspace and on the streets of Hong Kong.

The video, secretly recorded by fellow bus passenger Jon Fong, 21, quickly became one of YouTube's biggest hits, attracting over two million viewers, an English translation version and even a string of parody videos.

Reporters took several weeks to track down Mr Chan, who had no idea of how famous he had become.

He recalled that he had boarded the bus in a bad mood after an argument with his girlfriend, a single mother known only as Shirley.

Mr Chan claimed to have studied in Australia and Germany and been jailed for drug trafficking in Belgium. After returning to Hong Kong, he ran unsuccessfully for the post of Hong Kong chief executive three times.

However, he landed his first paid job in 10 years when a Western food franchise offered him a HK$9,000 ($1,800)-a-month job as a public relations officer after the video made him famous, reported Sing Tao Daily.

He started work on Monday.

Mr Chan now plans to capitalise on his fame, telling the Hong Kong media that he intends to invite American Idol reject William Hung to star with him in a musical version of the incident.

But the man on the receiving end of Mr Chan's verbal tirade on the bus, real estate agent Elvis Ho, 23, proved a less willing media star.

He told Commercial Radio: 'Why did I just sit there? I paid to be on the bus. You don't think I would get off the bus and waste my money, do you?'

He rejected an offer to meet Mr Chan again, saying: 'I really do not want to see him again. I would like to call on all media workers not to bring him to see me. Don't bring him to see me please.'

He hoped that the World Cup would take the attention off him.

The rage that made Mr Chan famous was still very much in evidence yesterday when he spoke of his beating to interviewers.

He said: 'What man does, heaven sees. The people who did this will definitely be caught.'
