Well, I have a dog named Sophie, a Cat named Fritz, a fish tank with a big fat goldy named Clementine, and a pet rat named Zelda (her sister, Miffy, recently got put to sleep due to cancerous tumors ).

My girlfriend has a dog named Gabby. Gabby and Sophie play alot too. Gabby is a chicken and is scared of anything made out of cardboard. Ironically, Sophie likes to eat cardboard.

I just love your animals, except for the rat. I have to truly say don't hold much affection for those animals. But I have heard that people who have rats as pets say they are as loyal as a dog to you.

I love this thread. I am a huge animal lover and my Aunt raises Shetland Sheepdogs (they look like minature Collies) and she is in the process of looking for some studs (for her dog I mean) so she can get some puppies. My Aunt says I can have one whenever that happens. I will happily post it on here so you all can see!

get a shelter dog, no need to bring even MORE dogs into this world when there are tons that die each day because people still (for whatever reason) try to breed their own. go save one instead, it will make you feel much better

I have had shelter dogs in the past, and have had experiences both good and bad with them. My Aunt (which is family) offered to give me one and I am not going to hurt her feelings by turning her down. Family comes before any animal, strange as that may seem.

BTW, my Aunt is a professional dog breeder and knows her business. You don't need to accuse her of causing dogs to die. That is plain rude. She is a responsible person.

i was not judging you in any way shape or form, simply stating that people should first consider finding a shelter dog before they go to a breeder. im glad your aunt is a professional but i still dont quite understand the point of breeding, especially these days when the purpose of breeding was for the function of the dog, and thats not really needed in todays world.
Im just saying go save a life before bringing another one into the world. All of our dogs past/present have been shelter dogs and would probably not even exist today if it wasnt for us.
Theres nothing more depressing than seeing 80% of dogs here even at my apartment complex walking around unspayed and unneutured because the owner wants to "breed them." Why?

Shelties are cool, I almost got a sheltie from a sheltie rescue. I got sophie instead and shes the best dog ever

Okay, well no major harm done. It's just that I get a bit ballistic when I feel somone is smearing a family member with unjust cause. She is a reputable breeder, no puppy mill nonsense, and any one who gets a puppy from her has to undergo an extensive background check. In fact, one buyer told her he had less trouble adopting a baby then buying a puppy. I don't know if he was joking or not, but my Aunt loves her Shelties and makes sure they go to decent homes.

I tell you what. I will make a deal with you. When I get this pup, I will drop by my local dog shelter place and get a companion for him/her. That way a dog's life is saved and my pup won't be lonely when we aren't home or whatever. As I have said, I have nothing against shelter dogs. I have had 3 in my life, 2 good exp, 1 bad exp. There are too many people who don't care for animals properly and it's sad and the only way to prevent the dog/cat/bird/fish etc overpopulating is to spade/neuter them.

make sure they like each other first. i once got a dog at the shelter and we took bailey (the family dog) to the shelter to meet her... and they loved each other. bailey is around 10 years old and is SUPER docile and submissive. well.... they get home... and the new dog hates bailey AND my dad and tries to tear both of them apart. the dog is female which makes it even more crazy. at one point she bit my dads arm on the 3rd or 4th day even after tons of training etc, and they made me take her back. thats when i got sophie

Yes, I bet your dad's arm was sore for a while. Hope he is okay now. I was thinking that when my Aunt wants to breed (her dog) and I get one, I will go to the shelter and look for one around the same age. Maybe they will get together along better. I know how you feel about shelter dogs though. I feel the same way. I watch Animal Planet at times when they have shows about mistreated dogs and it makes my blood boil. Fortunately there are a lot of happy endings with the dogs going to good homes, but sometimes there isn't. Anyway, it's been awhile since I have had a dog. The last one I had was a stray and we had her for 13 years and then we had to be put her to sleep due to a tumor on her back leg. She had a happy life (we had her since she was 6 months old) but it was still sad and I said no more dogs. But my Aunt has changed my mind so I am now excited about getting one. I will post when I get her so you can see.
