Any really old people here care to tell us stories of when they were kids before they invented cars and stuff? I can only think of Ancient as the only one 'old' man in MMG. U can ask him his age.
92 tommorrow if I make it...
I will be 278 next year
Sweet 16 and never been kissed
Well, I know that there is a member here with the username of "ancient" who was born in 1925, which would make him 81 years old. I still have a fair way to go in order to reach this status, however, being only 34 (born June 19, 1971).
I may be able to reach this age eventually; my grandfather from my father's side died a few years ago but managed to live up to the age of 92 (1908-2000). He lived in Germany for the first 20 years of his life and still remembered reading newspapers and hearing reports about World War I from the German side while he was still there. From what little information I have been able to gather, his parents basically "ordered" him out of the country and sent him to the USA once it became apparent that the National Socialist (Nazi) Party was going to take control of Germany. Unfortunately, it is still not known exactly what happened to his parents who stayed behind. One theory is that they were captured or killed by the Russians when they overran Berlin at the end of WWII, but without any real evidence this is only speculation. One thing that is for certain, however, is that it is from this reluctant German immigrant that I received the name of "Karl". Well it all started two hundred and seventy eight year's ago, to be continued QUOTE(mutant dog @ Feb 27 2006, 03:51 AM) Who is the oldest person here? Any really old people here care to tell us stories of when they were kids before they invented cars and stuff? I remember Ancient giving his age away at one point but I'm sure even he was born well after cars were invented. From the Discovery Channel : QUOTE 1886 : Motor age moves forward The first vehicles driven using internal combustion engines were developed roughly at the same time by two engineers working in separate parts of Germany – Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz. They simultaneously formulated highly successful and practically powered vehicles that, by and large, worked like the cars we use today. The age of modern motor cars had begun. If anyone actually remembers the 1880s before all this happened, please post. I did not know that. Learn something knew every day.
I'm a Dad but not a Grandad yet, so my age is somewhere between 50 and 53. And I know lots more today than I knew when I was 30 - 40.
Waht was life like as a kid ? Lots more time spent not looking at any kind of a screen, weekend bike rides to far away fishin' holes, cookin' the catch ( trout, perch) on a fire by the lake Sports like road hockey, many , many games that kids play outside and inside ( well, with maybe 5 good channels in Black 'N" White on the tv, we did not watch a whole lot ) Not so much violence and sex on tv or movies that's for sure !! It was a more innocent age. QUOTE(nenumphar @ Feb 27 2006, 06:15 AM) I'm old enough to be everyone's mother here. How the heck have I survived. lol love the wording of this post, good to see a few old timers about
Did I mention we built wooden go-carts with 16" baby carraige wheels on the rear and a rope tied to the front axle on each end for the steering. Brakes we had no use for, it was a racing go-cart and maxing out the speed was the only thing that mattered. Shhaazooooommm......!!
As we lived on a small hill in town ( Vancouver Island ), we had races with up to 4 go-carts , all made using scrap wood and wheels we found at the town dump. The trip to the dump was always interesting as a matter of fact as well. A big day, pack your lunch and it's off to the dump.
The article is really...um...yeah.

We lived right near the tip (dump), and lots of treasures, including old pram wheels were to be found there. And nothing was more exciting than a great big piece of cardboard, to slide down the grass hillsides on our ready made 'slippery dip'.
