The study, carried out by PC World, also showed that people spend two hours each night on the internet, playing computer games and watching television online in bed.

And half of Brits admitted to taking their mobile phone into the bath with them.

PC World spokeswoman Anina Castle said: "The survey shows that technology has become such an important focus and pastime in our lives that we now spend more time using it at home than we do anything else, even ahead of eating, sleeping and working."

Recent research by the Mobile Marketing Association revealed that Brits were using their mobile phones to help them carry out an increasing number of activities, as 66% of people used their phones for shopping or organising festivities.

Mobile retailing has exploded in the past year, with almost one third of shoppers having used an m-commerce site, and the number of people completing a transaction quadrupling, new research suggests.

The research, conducted by ForeSee, examined the habits of 10,000 shoppers with the largest online retailers over the Christmas period, and extrapolated the results to show annual trends.

Almost a third (32%) of respondents used their mobile phone to access a retailer website, and an additional 32% indicated they planned to access retailer websites or mobile apps by phone in the future.

Here are some other facts regarding cell phones from Phone Magazine:
Up first, is Verizons overall revenue. Its up, year-over-year by 3.4%, and brings their total for the second quarter 2010 to $16 billion. It managed to wrangle up an operating margin of 30.3%, which is a steady climb of 2.5% from last quarter. As far as customers go, Verizon added a whopping 1.4 million new folks into their fold. Interestingly enough, only 665,000 were post-paid, contract-based customers. So, we can safely say theres a gentle (yet steady) push for the pre-paid services. With those new customers added to their list, that puts Verizon at a hearty 92.1 million customers. That's quite a bit.

Prepaid Wireless, A Growing SMB Opportunity
Carriers, particularly competitive carriers, and their sales partners have a big opportunity in targeting small business owners looking to cut overhead as a way of dealing with recession-related pressure on their bottom lines. Pitching them on getting rid of contract-based cell phone service in favor of much cheaper unlimited prepaid wireless plans is a growing way to snag new customers, according to small business expert Liz Franklin.

With unlimited minutes, text and Web access for as little as $45 to $60 a month from prepaid wireless offerings, a small business could save $250-$800 per year for each wireless phone that it either owns outright or subsidizes through reimbursed expenses, she says. That's a big pot-sweetener for an operator looking to poach customers from the big 4, particularly since "prepaid" no longer equals "basic feature phone."

"Prepaid wireless is rapidly becoming a no-brainer for small businesses: As the recession grinds on, small businesses are cutting away more and more overhead in order to keep their doors open," she said. "With telecommunication costs being the third or fourth largest expense overall for a business, this is a big waste target for many small companies. And if you can save $250-$800 per wireless phone each year, why in the world wouldn't you take a hard look at the prepaid option?"

Sprint, Lightyear Shake Up Wholesale Model
Sprint Wholesale Solutions, the carrier sales arm for Sprint Nextel Corp., and Lightyear Network Solutions LLC, a reseller and VoIP carrier, signed a new wholesale agreement Tuesday that the companies say redefines the traditional wholesale telecom model.

The value and the terms of the 40-month agreement were not disclosed. However, the companies said Sprint actively will support Lightyear in marketing voice, data and wireless products that ride the Sprint network. Sprint will join Lightyear in committing resources, including cash, expertise and facilities to supporting the Lightyear sales channels, which include a networking marketing arm and an agent network of 275 partners nationwide.

We are viewing this as a groundbreaking agreement, said Mike Smith, director of marketing for Sprint Wholesale Solutions, speaking from the Lightyear Agent National Sales Conference being held Wednesday and Thursday. We are investing in a co-marketing relationship that we think is going to keep our company and their company and all of their sales folks focused on the customer.

Lightyear President and CEO Sherman Henderson said Sprint is stepping up with marketing, marketing dollars and much more aggressive pricing.
Sprint has used this partnership approach before with its cableco partners targeting residential users, but this is the first time that it's similarly engaged a CLEC targeting primarily business customers.

We had some great success [with the cablecos] and quickly found that it was just too big an opportunity not to transfer the approach, that strategy into other segments of our wholesale customer base, Smith said.

Smith said Lightyear was selected for this arrangement because of its €œenthusiasm, focus, energy and commitment as well as its longstanding relationship with Sprint. Lightyear has been selling Sprint's wireline services since 1997. The new pact strengthens the relationships and adds a wireless component.

You're right about that! My day job is a waiter and I just can't get over how people that come into the restaurant for a nice meal and a bottle of wine can't refrain from using their cell phones long enough to enjoy it!

i hate more people using there phones in the cinema, When the films on, so fustrating.

I had read earlier about increasing usage of mobiles in the loo. The article even coined a word "mobloo" for it. Many celebs admit to using their mobiles while using the porcelain throne because they don't find time otherwise. And also many have lost their phones to the watery grave. Usage of mobile phones during a cinema is really annoying. I have seen couples at lunches or dinners looking down at their phones instead of spending time with each other. Ironically they were invented to decrease distances by allowing anywhere communication. All that has happened is it has increased physical distance between people.
