A carbon credit auction is expected to take place in the second half of 2011 on the Budapest Stock Exchange, Fellegi said. The government will also continue direct sales of the credits and is holding talks with all possible buyers, including governments, brokers and end-users, he added. http://bbj.hu/economy/hungary-sees-huf-6-8...s-in-2011_58835

Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation" implies a distinction between the two activities. The process of identifying the two is what raises questions about how to measure each within the REDD mechanism, therefore their distinction is vital. Deforestation is the permanent removal of forests and withdrawal of land from forest use. Forest degradation refers to negative changes in the forest area that limit its production capacity. In recent years, estimates for deforestation and forest degradation were shown to account for 20-25% of greenhouse gas emissions, higher than the transportation sector. Recent work shows that the combined contribution of deforestation, forest degradation and peat land emissions accounts for about 15% of greenhouse gas emissions, about the same as the transportation sector. Even with these new numbers it is increasingly accepted that mitigation of global warming will not be achieved without the inclusion of forests in an international regime. REDD is, in fact, a mechanism of using market/financial incentives in order to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases from deforestation and degradation through putting a real value on the life of rainforests and paying communities to maintain them. Its original objective is to reduce greenhouse gases but it can deliver "co-benefits" such as biodiversity conservation and poverty alleviation. REDD credits offer the opportunity to utilise funding from developed countries to reduce deforestation in developing countries. Right now CCN's partner suppliers and supporters SGG - the Sustainable Growth Group are working towards getting the first approved REDD Carbon Offsets in circulation in the first half of 2011. This will be a world first, and CCN are keen to make a major 'REDD' Carbon Credit sales push. Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation'. CCN - Carbon Central Network have signed an agreement for the purchase of 10 million Carbon Credits derived from the protection of rainforests from deforestation. This is one of the largest agreements to be signed and committed to by an organisation in the world. These Carbon Credits are "Verified under the Global Conservation Standard" put in place by partner the Sustainable Growth Group - SGG, so these are real verified Carbon Credits that you can own outright for offsetting your own carbon emission or you can even purchase and sell them to other persons or companies wishing to offset their carbon emissions.
The Sustainable Growth Group are the project originators for the Rimba Rainforest Conservation Project (PT. Rimba Megah Lestari) based in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. Sustainable Carbon Options Ltd a related company are the project managers handling the Verification and Registration of any of the carbon credits sold in the project. The Rimba Rainforest Conservation Project is the largest conservation project in Indonesia if not also South East Asia to date. The total project area is 250,000 hectares, with a Forest area of 227,000 hectares of which more than 180,000 hectares is marked as Conservation Area. This region had been designated by the Department of Forestry Indonesia, to be used for logging and food crop development. This would result in the cutting down and clearing of all the trees in the area. That's close to 2500 square kilometres of land area being cut down. Proceeding ahead with this would create a real collapse of the ecosystem in the Irian Jaya area far greater than just the cleared amount of land. It would also result in the release of considerable volumes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere with significant environmental consequences being created over the decades to come. Not to mention that the loss of so many tens of millions of trees and their ability to absorb carbon from the atmosphere would be unrecoverable. It is estimated that the sale of Carbon Offsets from this project will generate an investment of $400 to $500 million USD of initial investment. Out of which $200 million is to be used for conservation capital over the next 30 years, $120 million USD to be used firstly for establishing sustainable forestry and energy crops in the areas of secondary and severely depleted forests and secondly for micro financing local communities. Thereby this strategy would still achieve the objectives of being able to provide for growing communities in the area. The Rimba Project involves finding sustainable ways to ensure the continued existence of the local indigenous people in the area approximately over 800 persons. When you purchase Carbon Offsets from CCN, funds are being put directly back into the project funding conservation activities and in supporting the local community with the establishment of new infrastructure and implementation of sustainable farming practises suited for that area. |
