This question is really hard to answer and has no real answer. It all depends on what niche you are entering, and how you would be operating. I always go for the passive income choice. Flipping a site is great for quick cash, but in the long run you should shoot for running your own little business, making money without doing to much work.

Both ways can be revenue generating. I think it depends on the website owner what the initial intention is. Website flipping just like real estate flipping have its own beauty. For me, it is for entrepreneurs who want to create, nurture then get a profit from what they have done. The thrill is in the creation and nurturing actually. For those entrepreneurs who want something stable at all times then the passive income stream from a website is the ideal one.

If I was into domain flipping business, I would still build one or two websites of my own to get passive income from them. One of the websites maybe a review website about domain flipping.

The later to me i think is the best, since the amount sold depends on revenue made from the site.

I haven't managed to flip any sites yet. Haven't had time to make any big change to my current sites.

Hi,
it's a great topic. I really mean it.
So many newbies get confused about these two terms. Actually flipping websites or domain names are the games of already experienced Online marketers.
It varies. There is no such a thing that Website flipping is better than others. I think the expert and genuine Online Marketers will never depend on either one of them. They actually build one or several authority websites with affiliate programs to so many products and side by side, they occasionally build minisites targeting Adsense programs and sell them as well.
Both are practiced by Original Gurus.
Hope it helps.
Thanks.

I am flipping sites though I am also maintaining some sites... In general, maintaining sites in the long run is profitable and less work.. in flipping sites, no site, no sale.

I would also go for building a site for long term income. But it just so happened that i lost interest in a weight loss blog that i had. Posting articles regularly became a boring task. Since it was pr3 with about 300 articles in it, i decided to flip it for a good amount & do not regret that decision.
One can consider flipping option if he/she is having multiple blog sites.

I'd love to do both. But considering that we're doing some other stuffs, sometimes we can't focus and accomplish many things. In my opinion,I would create one site, promote it,invite more visitors, and build reputation.

i would build one, get traffic to it and try to sell something people will want on it and then see how that goes for a while

As you have already got the answer that it depends upon in which niche are you going to enter. I think that the website flipping could be a permanent business but only for a specific period of time. Because it needs an energetic person and constant struggle. So it is not possible for a person who is at the age of 50 or above. As there is too much activeness and work is required.

Well there are different optiones about this? Well to start fast and when you have some money to start with you can buy a site that has some income and can start with that. When you know how to build sites that generate money from adsense then you can do it but in my opion the risk is great to fail.Buy a site that works is much easier.

One good factor is what kind of personality do you have, since if you're someone who can't concentrate yet alone find time to dedicate into building the site, then you're definitely better off flipping it. But if you're looking to make money, at times passively, long term then building a reputable and authority website would be the best way to go!
