On another note I have until Friday to prepare my stuff and house for the fires that are burning in the North East of Victoria. They say they wont stop until they hit the coast. we are about 200kms from the fires on the Hume hwy,(Glenrowan) high up in the hills so we can see the smoke for miles. We get a good view of Mt Buffallo.....most days!!! The red glow in the distance we saw last night was scary....
To be honest it looks worse today then it did Monday Looks clear towards the south, but we can not see Mt buffallo at all. Wangaratta and Benalla look clear so head that way if you can.

Talking of the bush fires, my ma & pa inlaws have a holiday house in Jamieson which they say could come under threat in the next 24 to 48 hours, my heart goes out to anybody that is in harms way!
On a bit of a brighter note, how good is Warny and his champion mates and how good is this series been so far!
Anyhow i will be coming by this thread a bit now as spending time in some of the threads at the moment for to long can leave you very depressed with the amount of ignorant people getting around!

My two littlies are changing schools at the beginning of next year, and today we went and had a look through their new school.
It is a lovely school, all the mod cons, the buildings were only built 2 years ago, but I am so nervous for them.
They are leaving a small country school of 50 children, and their new school is in the 'city' and has 350 children, so it is a big move for them. But it is only a few houses up the road, and provides them with a lot more opportunities than their current school.
I'm sure they'll be fine, not sure about me though.

Thanks for the well wishes. Today is d-day for us.
Woke up this morning to a lot of noise, looked out my front window and there were 2 fire trucks setting up a swimming pool out the front of my house. Not really a swimming pool but looks like it.
It's raining ash here at the moment and thick with smoke, but we aren't likely to see the fire until late this afternoon or evening. I have to head down the the fire station soon as I am working as a radio operator for the control center, I will be one of the most informed people being there but it is also a bit scary as if I document something wrong I could risk lives. Good thing I had a good nights sleep.
There is a lot of activity.

Well we made it through yesterday without it hitting us. It came closer but now we have to wait for Wednesday for the North winds to come back and move it towards us. I hope I am not sitting here Christmas day doing the same thing. The fire has to come out and burn to the lakes, it's just when that we don't know.
Very sad to hear that the historical "Craig's Hut" was burnt today. Also 23 or more houses in Tassie.
I was just up at my friends house up the road where we sat watching the flames dance along the ridges. We have had no views of the actual fires, only smoke, until tonight. We have 4 fires burning within 30km's of us which will join over the next few days. In a way I hope we see the fire on Thursday, I can't handle the waiting. We are going to see it some time, i just hope it is with weakened winds.

And down by Kosciusko, where the pine-clad ridges raise Their torn and rugged battlements on high, Where the air is clear as crystal, and the white stars fairly blaze At midnight in the cold and frosty sky, And where around the Overflow the reedbeds sweep and sway To the breezes, and the rolling plains are wide, The man from Snowy River is a household word today, And the stockmen tell the story of his ride.

I get some level of smoked out even when its just a back burn
I just am thankful I am down below where they usually are and can at least
offer a bed to the kiddies early in the piece get them out from underneath etc,
. Touch wood/screen it is so far not as bad in nsw where I am
Your inlaws may just want to check things out clear anything away that is fuel etc.

just wishing the best or praying can help ,

Ballarat is 'smoked' out again today, it's very low, and thick, and the bushfire smell is really strong.
Honestly, if you didn't know better, you'd think the fires were only 1 or 2 km's away.
Hey GP, love the idea of a rain dance.....bet your kids had heaps of fun doing it.....

First of all. Why wasn't I told about this thread. I was doing some research and found this..
Hello, I am from Central Queensland. I have heard about the fires and I sure hope that the conditions improve down there.
Up here, we have had a drought for so long, there is very little ground fuel. Just dirt, dust... so our chances of bushfire are small virtually non-existant. But I really feel for you all.
I suppose that you also have a great shortage of water.

CAKE AGAIN ARE YOU THERE ?
Hi Pete
I heard you shouting through the ether
I look in here every day to see how folk are getting on. I feel for you guys with flames crackling near your doorstep. No chance of that here just now, the main item on tonight's news was about flood warnings. Many rivers are rising particularly in central Scotland, there were TV pictures of the bridges in Perth starting to look ominous as the Tay rises. Rain is forecast for the whole week and today was just miserable. I was going to go downtown to do some Christmas shopping but I thought everything would get soaked, so I didn't bother.
I didn't realise we share the same forum birthday. I joined on the 15th of December, same day as this thread started - we'll need a double celebration for that.
Good to see Dorky here, I thought we were one Aussie down on the deal.

That depends where you are, Cheryl. I'm quite high up so I am not likely to get flooded, but a lot of villages and towns within 30 to 40 miles of me are going to have a worrying time.
