The Aussie thread must survive!

Thank you for the reminder Melle, you are now an honorary Aussie.

This site should continue, at thevery least, as an Aussie recipe site, even vegetarians can be taken care of here.

Please post your favourite, computer snack, and, I will counter with a traditional Aussie meal.

Melle,
Today we call boxing day, I really can't remember why we call it that.

Traditionally on boxing day, the young men of the family must hunt and cook platypus steaks on an open fire inside the house.

We have many housefires on boxing day, but we manage.

Platypus is best eaten a little rare, with fresh salad. The family dogs join in, and add great excitement to the festive event. Because we are very tired after lunch we would normally select one of the plumpest dogs for dinner, this is a great honour in the dog world.

Bruce missed out again.

He is inconsolable, but there is always next year.

Hello Melle,
Thank you for your kind enquiry, I had a very nice Christmas.

I spent the day with my family, and we had not so much as a cross word.

Lunch was spent with friends, and we drank it all up, before going to sleep.

You will notice a "new Pete", as we head towards the New Year, kind , considerate, understanding, thoughtful, and in general full of it.

May you enjoy all the good things that you deserve, your good friend.

It is a shame to see the Aussie thread die, but, I guess you can only speak about all of those venomous creatures that make Australia, the way it is.

So if the thread must close let it be on a happy note, good luck and God bless all MMG members, and may the day come when you contact one of us, and say,"look we will be visiting soon can we stay in touch". The answer will always be from us all.

Off course P.M.Me and I will do any thing in my power to make your stay enjoyable.

I am in Queensland in the sub-tropics "just", it is 9p.m. as I write this, the temperature is 29 c, but the humidity is around 75%. In other parts of the country the day time maximum has been up to 48c, however the humidity level is lower, making it far more tolerable.

My part of the country has beautiful winter averages of around 24c, this is not so cold that a visitor can not swim,, but for us BRRRRRRRRRRRRR. Water temperature is about 20c in winter.

I will take some pics, and post if you are interested.

i think a general mistake people make about Australia, is not realizing just how large Australia is. It can be HOT in the top end, and snowing in Tassie on the same day. We are a vast country, - I think, (help someone) around the same size as Canada? And I have been told England could fit into Victoria (our 2nd smallest state) 13 times. Would that be right Pete?

A.Fox.
This is my third attempt to reply, the site drops out just on thre add.

I will again attempt to tell the tale of a German backpacker, that I piked up,just North of Brisbane on a stinking hot summer afternoon.''

We got to maryborough, abot 3 hours out of Brisbanne, and he said"Ve are almost here)

"Ven vill ve arrive in Cairns" he had his oad map spread out on the seat. "well maybe the day after tomorrow, if we don't stop.

By the time we had reached Camilla, between ROCKY and McKay it was 10 p.m. and I had had enough. My mate owned the pub, so we got a room and he rolled out his swag on the floor.
Next morning we helped ourselves to stakes, eggs, bacon etc from the hotel kitchen, and by 4. a.m. we were on the road, I drove solidly all day, until 5p.m. before we had a snack and headed of to Cairns, anotheer 5 hours on.

We arrived in Cairns, pointed him to the shower and the spare bed room, 14 hours later we woke himup. By this time he had decided against the 18 hrs from Cairns to the top.

Is Queensland big, huge.

Welcome.

I don't know what was happening when I tried to send the last post, It was like my computer was jammed in some weird spellcheck program, it would not let me correct.

Anyone ever experienced this? I ran spy bot afterwards and found a couple of bugs, maybe this was it?

Glad to see the Aussie thread back on the up and up. Good onya Pete!!!

Hope that horrible storm a few days ago wasn't wherever it is you are in Qld. They reported down here, that you had massive hailstones in Qld.

Our pet huntsman disappeared crying.gif The egg sac was still there, so I opened it, and there were dozens of dead, perfectly formed little huntsmans. Think they got cooked, it's been so darned hot. I know we had a nest of baby birds in the ceiling who got cooked once......... ohmy.gif - under the tin roof and all.

So Pete, if you are inviting us Aussies to this thread.......the least you could do would be to be here when we visit.......geez, where's your Aussie hospitality blink.gif

I am sorry about your spiders, it breaks your heart when thy die like that.
We had an incredible storm about a week back, where we live on the water, hail is never an issue.

Just a matter of a few kilometers away, west of the coast, they had hail stones about the size of the proverbial cricket ball. (for the sake of visitors about 80mm in diameter).

I try to hang around, but I gotta make a quid somehow, and there is more money in the 12dp thread than there is here.

Apologies to all visitors, to those interested, I live about 2km (as the crow flies) fromthe crocodile hunter, he was once a valued member of our community, now that he earns 50-100 million a year he doesn't give a damn about the community that he grew up in.

Enough sledging for one night.

Pete.

Oh Gee it's lonely in here tonight, I've gotta get up in a minute to turn the Koala on the spit, I reckon I'll just go and brush the flies off, stoke up the fire, and call it a night.

You know Aussie Fox,
When I was just a little tacker, about eight. My father found a cclutch of tiger snake eggs in the bush, he brought them home, and everyday we watched and waited for them to hatch.
Finally they did, and, I was allowed to take one to show and tell, tucked up in a match box.

Our teacher decided to pick it up,and, was bitten on the finger, he threw it into the wastebin, and proceeded to teach, fifteen minutes later he fell out of his chair barely conscious. We called and ambulance, and he was taken to hospital for a week.

Fancy a grown man unable to handle a baby tiger snake?

Must have been a pommy.

LMAO Pete, all the upset people from UK, are going to start accusing you of being John Horan in disguise.....hehe

In all my 44 years, never once have I seen a live snake. As a kid, I grew up in a small place called Jacana, I'm sure you have never heard of it, but it was the end of the road, so to speak, we overlooked what is now Gladstone Park, Tullamarine etc. That was all paddocks and farms. The Moonee Ponds creek ran thru, and my childhood was spent playing at that creek (which had sand banks at that stage). i was always bringing home frogs, yabbies, taddies, mushies, blue tongues, ...I loved all that stuff. But, never, did I come across a snake - dead or alive. And now, living in the bush for close on 20 years, I have still never seen one.

Maybe they're scared of me lildevil.gif

A.F.
You are a lot closer to home than you think, I was born in Brunswick, at about 6 years of age we moved to West Breen, if you are not familiar with this, it is between Glenroy and Pascoe Vale.

My parents owned a general store, news agency etc, what was known in those days as "a mixed business".

Shortly after this we moved to Essendon, where I spent the next 25 or so years, Jacana was little more than a railway station in nthe middle of nowhere in those days, with a big pedestrian overpass, next stop "Broadie"

Like you I enjoyed the freedomof open spaces, I yabbied, collected taddies, and hunted mushies when the sun came out after the rain. My mum and Dad never had to worry about where I was, I was a bush kid on the fringe of a City. Mum knew that I would always come home when I was hungry, dirty, and tired.

Anyone that has not experienced this could never understand, we had miles to Roam in, without any danger,
perverts were unheard of,(not that they didn't exist).

My last house in Victoria was in Mascoma St Strathmore, looking across the Valley and the Creek was Glenroy, behind was the old Essendon airport, the airport was a constant source of wonder to us a kids.

My freedom was such that as a 10 year old my Mum would give me Ten Bob and allow me to catch a Tram into town,(or a train), there was never an issue of danger.

I have brought up two kids, both of whom have been driven to school and picked up later, protected, from all order of human monsters, educated to levels that were beyond the dreams of my elders, is this prrogress, I doubt it.

Pete
aussiefox
" Bush kid on the fringe of the city" .........exactly!!!!!

You've got a few years on me but life doesn't sound all that much different. Mum would make us a picnic lunch, and we'd go off for the day, home for tea, then outside to play till bedtime.

I know Pascoe Vale and Glenroy well, didn't know there was a place called West Breen slotted in there though.

I lived in Brunswick in my early 20's as a young mum, worked at Mitchell's the Brush People in Victoria street for a few years as the receptionist......haha, the old plug and cord switchboard.

So, why the move to Qld......can I ask? My brother and family live there, and he would never come back to live, he just loves it.

What a small world Pete biggrin.gif
