When you are looking how to market your on-line business or mlm opportunity, you can look back two hundred fifty years ago thousands of people flocked through Wales on their journey to what they felt sure was their destiny for work riches and glory; each of them dreamed of kissing their cares goodbye, and these were certainly the “entrepreneurs” the time
The mining was hard, back-breaking work, and only a very few ever really made good money in the business. But there were a lot of people, who got rich in the coal mines - very few of them were miners!
The thing about miners is that they need supplies. As they worked their way up to their destination, they had to purchase supplies: they needed picks and shovels, dynamite, as well as food stores and utensils, blankets and bed rolls. So who made the money? It wasn't the miners, in most cases, it was the merchants.
In the 1800’s an entrepreneur was someone who had the foresight to buy a dozen picks and a dozen shovels and take them to the boarders , and sell them at twice the price. And these entrepreneurs were savvy enough to capitalize on the eager miners who wanted to waste no time getting to their destination.
OK, so how is this little story going to help you to master the art of marketing your online business or mlm. In today's terms miners are not on a physical frontier, but they are on a virtual frontier, and it is called the internet.
There are vast amounts of uncharted territory there, There are literally thousands of internet "miners" flocking to it in search of their fortunes.
But who is really making money on this wild frontier. Well sure, some of the "miners" will get lucky and hit black gold . They may even ride it to the end and cash out wealthy. But statistically we know that 95% of these seekers will fail.
Why?
Typically, people enter into the home based business industry by buying into some sort of business opportunity, MLM or Network Marketing company before they really have an understanding of what online marketing really is all about.
By itself, this is not a bad thing. After all, every year millions of dollars are made in most of these companies. The real issue is that most of the people that are making the money are the people who already KNOW what they’re doing. Very few of the "rookies" have the fortitude to stick out the hardships to learn the trade. The truth is that most people really don’t know what they’re doing, which leads to this very high failure rate.
The first thing that your average MLM or Network Marketing company will tell their new business owners is to make a list and start pitching their opportunity and products to that warm list of family and friends. Honestly, this approach has worked for many decades, but it is very limited in how far it can go, and it is certainly NOT the most effective or efficient way to build a business today.
If you are entering into business this way, I would caution you right now. Liken yourself to the miner in 1800. If you had no idea what you were about and you headed into the hills to mine , with no experience and no tools, the likelihood of "striking it rich" would be very slim. (In fact, your very survival and life might be in jeopardy in that situation!) You just wouldn't do it.
However, if you stopped into your local mercantile in town and loaded up with picks, shovels, tools, and supplies, you would have a much greater likelihood of finding your success in the mines.
Today there are many other people who promote and sell tools and resources that help marketers promote their products and business opportunities, just like those merchants who supplied the miners.
As we have already observed, history shows us that the people who made the most money during the gold rush were not the miners, but in fact were the entrepreneurs of the time who were supplying the miners with their goods and tools; yes, their picks and shovels.
So, you ask, how does this apply to me as an internet marketer? Well, a similar scenario is repeating itself in the online frontier. The people who are making money consistently in this industry are those who are selling supplies (picks and shovels) in the form of advertising, tools, resource training and information products to the miners who are all trying to pitch and sell their business opportunities.
It's brilliant!
The people who are making the MOST money are the people who are building the most consistent, sustainable, long-term businesses; those who are providing for the needs of the "coal diggers." The savvy entrepreneur does both at the same time!
Why not be positioned as the savvy, entrepreneur who also profits from offering picks and shovels to a massive and eager market that is expanding at an exponential pace? And you’ll be doing this in a leveraged and automated way.
Why do both?
Here is a painful fact: most people searching for information on how to make money online have no interest what so ever in your product, or anyone’s product, service or network marketing company. They came online with a product in hand, and now they want to know how to sell it. The fastest converting prospects are not really interested in being put through the traditional pitch of a home based business and that is why most people find it hard to market their product online.
To be successful online, you have to give people what they want most: a way to market their product. Don't go out and dig for gold yourself … yet … start by teaching others how to do it first. People will always buy the "How To" information first before they buy into another product. If you are the one showing them and teaching them how to do the digging, it stands to reason that they will buy picks and shovels from you too, and that is the benefit of using the Marketing System that begins by offering people the training, information, and tools, they need to learn how to market a business online.
Once they gain confidence in their ability to market online they will be more likely to buy the actual business opportunity from you as well since you’ve built a relationship of trust and delivered value to them.
In short, you’ve GIVEN value to them with no expectation of anything in return and that is what builds a loyal following and repeat sales. And to do this correctly and make it simple, you’ll need to create an effective Front End Marketing Funnel designed to attract people faster, build a targeted list where you will build a relationship of trust and generate immediate, upfront cash flow for your business.

MLM is a way of organizing the people who buy products for mutual benefit and profit. Mutual benefit and profit means everyone earns what they're worth and gets what they pay for. To be successful, people must (1) join the business, (2) buy products, and (3) tell others who will hopefully do the same. Ideally, you're looking for customers who want to be distributors, or distributors who what to be customers. The two things you all have in common are that you want the products and you want to make money. MLM is not a business – it’s a type of compensation plan and a marketing strategy used to attract agents to promote a particular companies products and services. While MLM and Network Marketing are often considered synonyms, they’re not really the same thing either. Network Marketing is a strategy of marketing products through networks of people, typically via word of mouth. Multilevel Marketing on the other hand, refers to the way people who do network marketing get compensated - that is, they get paid not only on sales they personally create for a company (single level) but also on sales they help create through recruiting and training other agents and helping them recruit and train other agents and so on – in other words, they get paid on multiple levels of sales, hence multilevel marketing. The reputation of legitimate companies using MLM compensation plans suffer today from the myriad of pyramid schemes and other scams claim to be “MLM companies”. In my opinion, legitimate companies should not refer to themselves as “MLM companies”, but instead refer to themselves as “direct selling” companies in a particular “industry”. For example, Amway and Herbalife are direct selling companies, primarily operating in the health & beauty industries. ACN, Inc. is a direct selling company operating in the telecommunications industry. By using a multi-level compensation plan they encourage people to become agents as the income potential is higher than a single-level compensation plan. Multilevel plans also of course encourage people to recruit more agents to increase their income potential. Unlike pyramid scams though, recruiting people isn’t the goal – it’s simply a marketing strategy to help increase product sales.

Let's face it; promoting your MLM program online should be a slam-dunk, shouldn't it? Millions of opportunity seekers looking for extra income, automated lead generation and follow up systems that can contact and sort through thousands of prospects at the push of a button, and lots of money to be earned if you get it right.
Why then is it so hard to find qualified, active members for your downline on the Internet? The main reason is that most people are approaching their lead generation the wrong way.
Let me explain.
Most people starting off in Network Marketing start looking for 'opportunity seekers. Here's something you probably didn't realize...the average opportunity seeker is looking for something they can do that -
A. Doesn't require much, if any work B. Doesn't cost anything to get started but pays a regular income C. Doesn't have any risk attached, especially the risk of being rejected
By trying to attract opportunity seekers to your business, what you are most likely doing is attracting people who are looking for a 'JOB'. These people are exactly the wrong market for your MLM business because even if you DO get them on board, they will suck up your time and most likely never help to build your business.

Promoting your website is fairly easy when you know where to go and how to follow certain steps. The best part is when you see your webpage at the top of the organic search results for you keywords.
There are so many ways to promote your website, but probably one of the best ways is to utilize social networking. Get the hype out and you will see fantastic results.
Just remember, everything takes time and effort on your part especially if it's worth it, so get out of your own way and just do it.

I agree with this, most people are use to working 40+hrs a week with a paycheck. You can work 40+hrs a week in your own business and not make a dime... this is why after only 1 month or 2, people stop and can't work an online, mlm, network marketing type of business. They aren't thinking long term and can't afford to wait. A catch 22... As with any affiliate program, if you can truly signup for free and start earning money, that helps... There's a new company out called Nice An Healthy that is network marketing but geared toward affiliate marketing to allow members/affiliates to market using online and offline marketing. They aren't limiting what their members can do to earn money. There's a company website, but a member can create their own blogs, websites, etc... Will be interesting to see if this works...

The best way for me to market my on-line biz or mlm opportunity is to pay their way into the program. Pay for their upgrade to basic level membership, for most programs it costs only a measly $5.
It is better than spending tons of money and time to buy traffic, safelists, pay for leads, etc. I have been down the road, with little result to show except spending lots of money for fake leads.
Most people are naturally fearful of joining an unfamiliar program pitched to them. They fear losing money in joining a program which may turn out a scam.
If you pay for their way in at the basic membership level, they will be receptive. There is no risk to them and they can look more into the program in detail. They can participate in webinars, tele conferences, ask and get answers from the owners of the program, interact with the memberships, etc. They can do all the necessary checks to convince themselves about the program.
When they are convinced, they will work the program seriously and go through all the membership levels. When they can see results, they just duplicate the concept of paying forward for their downlines. Everyone wins in the end.
This approach is much easier and direct and takes out all the headache of convincing others to join you. At least, it is so for me.

Yeah, but the problem I've always seen with the "I'll pay your way in" business model is that $5.00 is a measly amount of money to work for. And...how many $5.00 bills are you going to throw away on deadbeats? It seems that business model is not a very prosperous way to make a living online when you think about it.
I prefer programs that are free to get into and pay at least $100 per referral...now that's smart business if you're lucky enough to find something like that. :0)
