A lot of successful websites depend on returning visitors to account for a major part of their traffic. Returning visitors are easier to convert into paying customers because the more often they return to a site, the more trust they have in that site. The credibility issue just melts away. Hence, keep your visitors coming back to your site with the following methods:
1) Start a forum, chatroom or shoutbox
When you start a forum, chatroom or shoutbox, you are providing your visitors a place to voice their opinions and interact with their peers -- all of them are visitors of your site. As conversations build up, a sense of community will also follow and your visitors will come back to your site almost religiously every day.
2) Start a web log (blog)
Keep an online journal, or more commonly known as a blog, on your site and keep it updated with latest news about yourself. Human beings are curious creatures and they will keep their eyes glued to the monitor if you post fresh news frequently. You will also build up your credibility as you are proving to them that there is also a real life person behind the website.
3) Carry out polls or surveys
Polls and surveys are other forms of interaction that you should definitely consider adding to your site. They provide a quick way for visitors to voice their opinions and to get involved in your website. Be sure to publish polls or surveys that are strongly relevant to the target market of your website to keep them interested to find out about the results.
4) Hold puzzles, quizzes and games
Just imagine how many office workers procrastinate at work every day, and you will be able to gauge how many people will keep visiting your site if you provide a very interesting or addicting way of entertainment. You can also hold competitions to award the high score winner to keep people trying continuously to earn the prize.
5) Update frequently with fresh content
Update your site frequently with fresh content so that every time your visitors come back, they will have something to read on your site. This is the most widely known and most effective method of attracting returning visitors, but this is also the least carried out one because of the laziness of webmasters. No one will want to browse a site that looks the same over ten years, so keep your site updated with fresh bites!

Of those listed, I think the use of web blog and forum stand out because those are more likely to catch peoples' attention.

Just to add, I realised giving away freebies are definitely a way to bring visitors back to your site. Last month alone, I added 3 freebies for them to download. Intending to do this on a monthly basis.

Thanks mate, these are just the right methods and you named them all.
One more thing I would add is be in touch with your most loyal visitors. On my forum I usually keep in touch with the top posters and take their advice to make the forum even better. ;-) It works!!

Yeah - nice topic to post a thread about.
I'm just about to launch a memberhsip site so, for me, the critical thing will be fresh, new content every month.
In general terms, though, these 5 topics are great to focus on to keep your visitors coming back and this will enable you to monetise your list to it's full potential.

yeah updating frequently with more content keeps them coming but I also think if you are friendly and create a sort of friendly vibe people like that and it may attract them back to your blog!

I think the most important thing is the unique content. You can't go wrong with building constant and useful content. If you manage to do that, you"ll have new people coming in on all directions, through word of mouth, linkage, bookmarks etc. The content you write is what will keep readers coming back for more and share with their contacts. Make sure you add a tell a friend script on your website which makes it easy to share.

I'd say as well is to use a service such as feedburner to allow subscriptions by email. This way when you update your content it will automatically send them an email. I feel this helps promote constant traffic to your website.

I was going to say exactly this. I think having the most original or relevant content will keep the visitors coming in a number 1 esque fashion. Making sure to keep the information relevant seems to have always done other admins well.

I think the bottom line from the openning post, is that visitors will come back if there is good quality content, and they will come back as often as you post new information. For instance, I check in on digg mutliple times during the day, because there is new information being posted very, very frequently. Several blogs that I follow, I will check in on a couple times a week, since I generally know they are good for a couple of posts per week.

Thank you for the poster to share this great opinion. Adding some way or interesting game and puzzle and update useful information are the key to keep your website fresh. I am thinking how to combine both of them to increase my traffic.

Thanks for the tips on how to keep visitors coming back to your website. This is good stuff, and I'm going to get to work on at least one right away. Also, I agree that it is hard work providing new and fresh content on a regular basis. One thing I've been doing is re-writing PLR Articles and using them for content. It's much easier and quicker, and it helps you to learn about a subject at a faster pace. Thanks, Russell
