4 Deadly SEO Mistakes You Must Avoid
By : Cheow Yu Yuan

Are you getting mediocre results from SEO? If yes, this article is for you. To achieve success with SEO, you must target the right key phrases and build links consistently. It is a continuous process - not a one-time effort.

With this in mind, let us take a look at the 4 deadly SEO mistakes that you must avoid at all cost. These are the mistakes that many optimizers made that prevent them from getting successful results:

1. You do not tag your pages with relevant key phrases. This is the most common mistake that many webmasters made. I believe you have seen websites that place only their company names in their Title tags. Title tags are words that appear on the top left hand side of your Internet browser. You must place keywords in your Title tag because search engines give a lot of weight to it. The title tag is like the Title of a book. It tells readers what the book is about. Likewise, the title tag tells search engines what your website is about. If you are trying to get higher rankings for a keyword but it is not present in your title tag, it is very hard for search engines to award you with high rankings. Therefore, make sure that your title tag describes the content of your page and place important keywords right at the front of it.

2. You do not have enough content or your content is outdated. SEO is more than just tagging your pages. You need to have enough content for search engines to read. To rank high on search engine listings, you must place keywords in your content. Moreover, if your website content is outdated, search engines will visit your site less often, and thus view it as less important. This also prevents your site from getting higher rankings in search engine listings.

3. You optimize the wrong keywords. If you are trying to optimize keywords that are too generic, it is very hard for you to achieve success from your SEO effort. This is because you will get yourself into a more competitive battlefield with other optimizers. So, spend some time to do your research and look for key phrases with lesser competition but relevant to your business. Remember that if you optimize keywords that are not relevant or too generic, even if you achieve high rankings for them, there will be no conversion.

4. You do not build link consistently. Link building is a process of getting more incoming links to your website. Quality inbound links will help your website to achieve higher rankings for competitive keywords. But link building is a continuous process. If you never do it consistently, you will not achieve good result from SEO. So, always build links consistently by using article marketing, blog commenting, directory submissions, and other common strategies that optimizers are using.

These are the 4 deadly SEO mistakes that you must avoid at all cost. Good luck!

Do you think that back links are most important for getting more traffic to your site?

I'd have to say that link building is HUGE... I have a 3 month old blog that is on page 1 of google for a highly competitive term that has over 84 million competing sites/pages... start link building is all I have to say!

What is the URL of your blog? It would be interesting for me to see it smile.gif

I am very new to Seo and just installed the all in one wordpress Seo plugin and I am also new to Wordpress as I used to blog on Blogger before. The thing is my blog isn't a niche one but we are hoping it will be a brand one so for us rising up the Seo ranks it will be a tougher job. I need o change our title tag as it sucks so thanks for reminding me of that. I think I may use dot com lifestyle as the Title tag but don't know if that will rank well. Any advise would be good for us.

do your keyword research... then you know where you are heading and what you need to do... i'd recommend focussing on high searched and low competition keywords first and then diverting that traffic to your blog or sales page... then once your traffic starts to build as do your backlinks... you can start to focus on the more competitive keywords and keep building until you are "authority" enough to rank on page 1 for pretty much any keyword you choose smile.gif

For Google the most relevant thing is link building one-way to your site with good anchor text . The difference between 10 visits and 10000 visits from Google is all about link amount. And if you've a 2+ years old site (not just made), add alot without concerns, even in a short timeframe. Quantity can beat quality (if it is massive). Just be sure to not blackhat in obvious forms, because big growth in SEo will make you manually reviewed.

I think it takes some time before your website means something...

Thanks for the great list. I think we all probably read this information all the time, but a nice, concise list always provides some motivation!

I'm starting with SEO. I'll avoid these mistakes for sure. Thank you

Great read! I believe SEO is a never ending process, and people should never stop learning about it. Many beginners will do a few basic link building for the first few months, and then never do anything else about it afterward.
shawon
Thanks for your suggestions. I'll follow them carefully.

I dont agree to 4th tip. I had some sites where I build links 6 months back. But still I have almost same rank from Google even I do not build links constantly.

Don't forget, an inbound link is only valuable if you don't have a reciprocating outbound link... they cancel each other out
Kaabi
This is actually pretty comprehensive. It mentions the importance of title tags, keyword density, keyword research, fresh content, and link building. Pretty good!

thanks for the tips. really glad you put alot of detail into it and explained it well. alot of times people will post just a few words on each subject and not give you a very good summary of what theyre trying to say.

again, thanks smile.gif

Great information! I will have to put some of these into practice. And definitely do a little more research for keywords!

Agree. Target keyword is very important, and keyword research is necessary for the SEO. Another SEO mistake is that the people target on single word as their keyword but not looking for the keyword phase. Keyword phase is better since the visitor is more targeted. Also, keyword phase has lower competitive compare to single keyword.

This is probably the "worse-horse" part of marketing your website. A total pain in the butt!
googleadmin
It's very helpful, I think this seems basic point but most of us don't pay attention enough. Backlink is also important. However, If you are White SEO the quality content is need.
darklumina
The problem with this list is that google (if that is your focus) ignores the meta keyword tag. That does not mean that it is not useful, as other search engines may use it, but I would focus more on content, using header tags (<h1-6>) where appropriate, and just plain quality overall.

I would say that the #1 item should be replaced with don't keyword stuff.

I'm going to be reading this article again, and focusing on it properly. I know the basics of SEO, but it doesn't matter how much you know... its whether or not you remember to apply it consistantly... smile.gif

One more thing I want to add is : Filter Spam SEO out.

SEO content isn’t hard to produce. It’s difficult to see why all the fuss is made over it. This is especially so when poorly written content fares so badly with the search engines. A little effort more can make all the difference; the visitor to the web page can actually understand what is written, and the search engine will reward the effort too.

SEO content is what the search engines want. They are clamping down on badly written content that adds little or no value. That’s why good, well written SEO content is always the best way to go!

Thanks for sharing this useful and nice information.

I would also say that poor quality link building can be harmful, especially if bots are used or it looks like spam to search engines.
