Based on the result of Darren Rowse’ latest poll on his Problogger blog, a huge percentage of bloggers admitted that they did not make good money last year. Apparently, the poll result of the last 2 years is almost the same. Although the results may not be scientific, I think they are realistic enough.
Now, the question is – will they be able to make good money this year? The fast answer is no, but let me elaborate further.
It is not that they are doing it on a part time basis only, as there are employed bloggers who are earning good money. In fact, there are even teenage bloggers who are also making it big. Therefore, it is the strategy that makes the difference.
Most bloggers enjoy socializing with each other but avoid the forums that can help them. They join overcrowded social sites, and leave comments on top blogs that are not related to their niche.
Consequently, they have affiliate widgets in their blogs but they rarely talk about the products they sell. They focus on increasing their subscribers, instead of finding potential buyers.
They want to make money from Adsense but they do not place ads on top of their posts. This is because they don’t want their readers to be annoyed with them. In fact, they even choose the niche they want even if it is not popular.
Furthermore, they work hard to get high PR but ignore the importance of SERP. They thought that building backlinks only needs quality to make it on top of the search engines.
Lastly, they spend more time in making quality content than promoting their blogs. Their traffic may be high but not the targeted ones.
In short, they fail to optimize the use of the two most important words in Internet marketing - relevant connection.
So will bloggers make good money online in 2009? No, not unless they will change their strategies.

Some of these facts were hit on the spot as I have seen myself focusing on certain things in a blog. Blogging can sometimes be a challenge but if you just stick with it and tune it everyonce in a while you'll start to pull more profit.

Informative post! And yes you are correct in implying that traffic is better if it is 'Targeted' traffic!

advertising as a whole has been going down. Big sites like facebook and myspace are making less, so it will be a lot harder for smaller sites

I suppose this could also depend on your definition of "blogger". If you mean it in its purist sense of someone who writes their thoughts and opinions about subjects they hold dear then I tend to agree with what was said on ProBlogger. But you could also define a blogger as anyone using blogging software (mostly WordPress) to deliver rich, monetized niche websites.
This second group of bloggers is more likely to have increased profits in 2009 as their sites are more mature and hopefully gaining more organic traffic. And more and more people are turning to the internet to save money.
Having gone through ALL, and I mean ALL, the money making projects you can possibly know, I switched mindsets to learn the true business of building websites and generating real targeted traffic. I wasted thousands of hours on traffic exchanges and such like and consider that a major lesson in my online education.
Forget mlm, network marketing, hyips, autosurfs and the like and do something positive with your energy and enthusiasm. Build a real business for yourself.
