netfirms.com has an everyday price of $6.99 for .com domains, but frequently have them on sale for $5.99. They provide a lot of free services included.

Good evening,

Are there any downsides to using cheap domain names?

Unfortunately, yes. If a cheap domain name company is unscrupulous, a person may never receive a domain name at all. What happens is the company tells the customer to wait a few days for the domain name to become active. However, at the end of the timeframe, the domain name still doesn't work. And since the company is unscrupulous anyway, emailing customer service won't do anything.

How can a person ensure they don't encounter a fraudulent cheap domain name company? First and foremost they need to check to see if it is registered with the Better Business Bureau. This is an organization that ensures businesses are operating in a legitimate manner. Secondly, they need to see if the company has normal contact information, such as an address and a telephone number. Thirdly, they should see if the company has a bad reputation on message board dedicated to webmasters. Of course, one may not always get an opinion on a particular company but if they do they will know to stay clear of it.

Oh yes, i've been burned with registerfly.com . I've lost 2 domain names, i've also paid for a domain name that i never received, and when i tried to contact them nobody answered. So don't go too cheap, stick with the professionals.

I have been burned with registerfly also. I also had problems with 1and1 where it took days where they were saying that the registration was in process. I finally gave up and registered the domain name somewhere else and 1and1 still told me that it was in the registration process with them.

I have never had any problems with godaddy, netfirms, or dynadot and you can't get much cheaper than them.

You can frequently get a domain name for free when you open a new hosting account, but I personally recommend that you keep the domain name registrar separate from the host. If your host is also your registrar and you have problems with your hosting account, there is a potential problem. If the domain name is registered with somebody else, you will have no problem in pointing the domain name to a forwarded site or to another hosting account.

I used godaddy

From what they advertised, the domains are selling at 9.99.....Before purchase, there is an option to enter discount codes ... Just do a search on Google and you could find the codes..

I bought mine at a cheaper 7.65 instead of 9.99 ...

Moreover, the tech support is helpful to my questions......and the configuration menu is easy to use...

NameCheap, I think is pretty good. You'll get a free WhoIs protection with every purchase. Also you can find coupon by simply type it on search engine.
