I have been watching the news and it really looks bad for New Orleans area. I don't know if any of our MMG family is from that area but my prayers are with all those people that live there. May you all be safe
Good luck everyone...with this hurricane as large as it is anyone from west of New Orleans to Mobile will get hurricane force winds...and Tropical storm force winds can extend up to Kentucky/Ohio border (39MPH+)...its going to be bad! I hope no one is even in New Orleans right now...If you are Id get to the super dome because at this point the city of New Orleans won't be habitable for months...
Isn't Kenny near that area? If so, take good care.
Yeah I think he is....I think he left for Texas...
Regardless of your religous belief, pray for the folks in New Orleans and the surrounding area. It is not just the residents either, the tourists are stuck and can't get out.
They are predicting catastrophic loss of life from this one.
My prayers go out to everyone affected by Katrina.
This is so stressful even not being in the middle of it. Watching people in line trying to get into the dome seeming like the line is barely moving & the rains have started. And worrying about everyone & the pets & animals that won't be getting to safety. I hate watching misery. I hope this won't be as bad as they are saying. At one point they sound like it could be more like a 5+. PLEASE everyone get to safety. And pray for everyone.
yes kenny is in that area but I do believe he has left
its very close to landing
Yeah it is..Going to be very interesting to see what happens with New Orleans...
that is a huge storm. i really hope the superdome holds up to this. i saw on tv there were so many people waiting in line to get in there.
QUOTE(breezeless @ Aug 28 2005, 04:06 PM) And worrying about everyone & the pets & animals that won't be getting to safety. An interesting human-interest story on the news here in Houston tonight was that the Houston SPCA had brought in 300 additional cages to take in the New Orleans SPCA which was bringing all their animals here. Turns out that during Tropical Storm Allison, we sent all our animals to New Orleans. Its really great to see everyone pitching in and helping, doing whatever is necessary. Hoping everyone in New Orleans finds shelter too.......
My prayers to the people...
QUOTE(Global*Money @ Aug 28 2005, 08:39 PM) My prayers to the people... Mine too....it looks so bad.
...another Tropical Depression has developed in the Atlantic...
Some people here are predicting tropical storm force winds for me here in Ohio and 5-10 inches of rain...Thats pretty amazing
yes just saw the news on TV... looks really bad
I haven't been glued to CNN like this since 9/11
Pretty sad when CNN does a better job covering a hurricane than the Weather Channel lol
QUOTE(nothinggirl @ Aug 29 2005, 03:40 AM) Mine too....it looks so bad. What she said
I am from Just west of new orleans... its like maybe 40 miles as the crow flies..... the path of this storm is from extreme south Terrebone parish to the tip of Venice... well where I am from is near that... and yes we left and are sitting safely in hot texas.... I am watching TV right now and the preasure has dropped again ... it had rose to 910 and is now at 908... thats a sign of it gaining strength. NOT GOOD...
thank you for being concerned... As far as people being amazed that strong winds are predicted all the way to Ohio... well this is a CAT 5. For comparison a Tropical Storm named Cindy hit us right after July 4th. It did damage all the way to Atlanta.
Hope everything goes ok for people from there cat. 5 phew big bugger
just checked the news, looks like it's still a direct hit on New Orleans in the next few hours. doesn't seem to be weakening at all.
they just now lowered it to a category 4. guess that's a little better maybe, but it sure does still look big and scary.
I am so sad to hear all these natural disasters everyday!
Im seeing news reporters "playing" down the damage in New Orleans...Some are acting like 100-125 MPH winds are nothing... Well truth to the matter is we havent seen the residential areas around New Orleans we have just seen the skyscrapers in the city, which are damaged...tons of windows are broken out and some have walls ripped out...They are also issuing tornado warnings for the eyewall winds...
Also the tornado threat/wind threat/flood threat will extend all the way up to Canada, the wind threat would be less, but the tornado threat will be very real...We are expecting winds of 30mph with gusts to 40mph doesn't seem like much, but I am quite a few hundred miles away from the coast QUOTE(AMJD12131987 @ Aug 29 2005, 12:11 PM) Im seeing news reporters "playing" down the damage in New Orleans...Some are acting like 100-125 MPH winds are nothing... What scares me more these storm's are getting worse and they say it's due to global warmimg. We might be living underground someday.
So sad to hear this bad news.
Im amazed Katrina still has a well defined eye on satellite imagry
Good point dswide. However, global warming may be a cause long term effects on hurricane intensity, it isn't the reason why we are seeing them so strong and frequent now. It's a cycle that happens every so often, where extensive warming happens in the ocean, the temperature of the oceans then affect what happens on land. I would also like to note that waters off the Northeastern US coast is very warm..so it would be possible for a hurricane to maintain itself if it would happen to head for lets say New York... As far as Florida goes...It's very heart breaking to see Florida getting hit so much, but its more of the way the landmass is situated to the ocean and the wind aloft has been steering these things into Florida...
Sad news now coming in very slowly...Whats amazing the National weather service office in New Orleans has taken a huge hit...the doppler radar is down as well and other offices from nearby states are issuing warnings...
I have just seen in a storm report 55+ people may have died in Gulfport, MS...
My prayers go out to all in the
hurricane affected areas.
Read this news:
http://www.cnn.com/2005/WEATHER/08/29/mobile/index.html QUOTE After taking a battering from Katrina, the oil rig drifted and got stuck under a bridge in the Mobile River Scary...
that's terrible.... I think that is from the dream I was having... Not pushing it though.... I had a dream of people in a lake screaming... I don't remember having that dream the past couple days
QUOTE was telling me the last few times I've had them things happen and I have them up to the day it happens sometimes starts a few months before anything happens. That's when I think I might of said "Are you serious". After that I was still in the same place but something was pushing me against the wall which could of been the sign of Apnea and Slowed breathing.... I was trying to wake up at that point and I was trying to press something I don't know what it was but that part may be the eye twitching I experienced. I then appeared at Roy Lake (A favorite lake of mine when I was little) walked around but people were in the lake screaming and I think thats when I started screaming. That's when I started running as fast as I could... After awhile I got back to my place and remembered the piece of paper all of the paper was blurry and couldn't read it, I said "Red and Blue" and found out those are the 2 colors she used when writing the # and Letter. I wonder if it was Roy Lake.... anyways just telling you guys a dream I had posted here before any signs of the hurricane. I have been watching the news and My best friends entire family lives down there.... He was going to move there after he passed his nursing exams but he failed and never had a chance to move down there. His family is all safe though and went to a friends house.
Like we need more sad news, but I am starting to see reports about major tree damage and minor structural damage in Georgia now with possible entrapments from possible tornadoes.
Also winds in TN are starting to gust really hard, at least there is good news its weakening slowly but surely Just plain QUOTE(drewkj @ Aug 29 2005, 09:36 PM) that's terrible.... I remember reading that dream a couple of weeks ago. That is really kinda interesting. I guess a dream can be interpreted more easily once something that seems similar happens...but it does make you wonder if they are related. The pictures of flooding and storm damage are incredible...I cant even imagine the scope of this. The worst I have seen was back in 1992 when the rivers in the upper midwest were all flooding like crazy. Drew, you probably remember that...I think it hit some towns close to you fairly hard if I remember correctly.
Everyone near this storm is in my prayers! We are supposed to get the tail end of it wednesday but nothing at all like those poor people just heavy rains! I hope everyone is safe!
Still no news at all from anyone near my house.... been watching the news for days now... last nite the levees in new orleans start breaching and according to reports some places have 30 foot of water... water was reported to be rising at an inch every 5 mins... its just getting worse... the death toll is rising and the stress of worring about my friends n neighbors (all family is out of state but still worried about thier belongings) is getting unbearable....
Just think they say we dodged the bullet... i would sure hate to see if we got a Direct hit....
Oh my gosh....I just heard martial law has been declared in New Orleans and the surrounding area
wow, i hadn't heard that. i just got finished looking at some pictures online..from new orleans, mississippi...even in parts of florida. huge mess. so awful to see all that. i read a story about a man trying to hold onto his wife and kids while their house split into...then had to watch as his wife was washed away with the flood waters. so many sad stories.
kenny, hope you hear from some of your friends soon and that they are ok. I wonder if we will see even more flooding from the Mississippi or if most of that has already happened. I suppose if the storm goes up to Ohio, then we can expect to see some higher river levels as the Ohio River empties into the Mississippi and on down the line. My thoughts and prayers are on you guys that were affected or will be affected.
Well... Its 2 PM here in southwest Ohio..Flooding is starting to get bad. All of the counties in the viewing area here are under a flood warning and winds are gusting to 35 MPH now
The entire city of New Orleans is under an evacuation order, even those who rode out the storm. They have to take people out by boat because all the roads are destroyed. They say it will be at least a month to even lay the electric lines, longer to get the power grid back up.
The devastation is terrible. Gulfport is gone, Biloxi destroyed, New Orleans uninhabitable. Many small towns whose names I do not know wiped off the map. My prayers are with you.
I have to agree with some people who have toured the damage that it almost looks like "tsunami" damage...This is such a devastating storm... It brings the good and bad out of people, there is martial law in New Orleans and I believe most of the state... Not only that...The damage isnt what will be the worse part of this it will be the number of dead I think this could surpass the death mark set by Camille, some parishes in LA havent even been seen yet... I believe some of Plaquemines parish have been completely destoryed or no longer there...
Also their are two tropical disturbances in the Atlantic that will probably become depressions very soon. By the way the reason why the rest of New Orleans has been evacuated is because they were trying to fix the levee that had been breached it did not succeed and water will probably rise 10-15 more feet..Also the pumps have all but quit..With this one breach once New Orleans floods Im worried about other levees.
Scary
My area is getting the tail end of this soon. Hurricane Katrina ravages southern US NDTV Correspondent Wednesday, August 31, 2005 (Washington): Rescuers are racing to reach survivors in the southern US struck by Hurricane Katrina, one of the most devastating storms in the country's history. Over 80 people have died already. Helicopters and boats are being used to reach people stranded on the rooftops of flooded neighbourhoods in the area. Katrina, which walloped New Orleans and other Gulf Coast cities, could cost the insurance industry up to US$ 25 billion in claims. A section of New Orleans is submerged, communication links with the city cut off, around seven lakh people without power and looters snatching everything - that is the live image of the city which was ravaged by a deadly hurricane. Rescue operations on The live electricity lines and broken gas pipes has slowed down the rescue efforts as rescuers in boats and helicopters struggled to reach people stranded in the floods. "You are going to be looking at hundreds dead along the coast of Mississippi," spokesman of a resort city Biloxi Vincent Creel said. Already, US President George W Bush has cut short his vacation in Texas to lead the relief work and see for himself the extent of damage while the Governor of Lousiana Kathleen Babineaux Blanco asking those who still remain in the city to leave. Authorities are working on a plan to evacuate the residents who remained in New Orleans despite a mandatory evacuation order issued Sunday as Katrina, then a Category 5 hurricane, bore down on the Gulf Coast, Blanco told reporters. Gas prices are out of control now its already 3.55 where Im at for regular...In Atlanta I've heard gas has hit $5.00, with lines miles long... Well looks like its just the beginning...I think we might see a repeat of the 1970s ..oh lord I feel the riots coming on
My heart and prayers goes out to people affected by this huricaine. Imagine your whole city going down or seeing your neighbor's body floating by in the wreckage
Hundreds of people are presumed dead. It's tsunami mode all over again Now there's looting and gas prices are spiking again. Natural disaster can be devastating. |
