Police on Tuesday arrested a 24-year-old self-employed man who masterminded a spate of internet cheating cases involving the sale of car parts and accessories.
The man, using the alias "Jude Tan", lured unsuspecting car enthusiasts to an online motoring forum and conned them of thousands of dollars by claiming that he was able to get bulk discounts for car parts and accessories.
The victims would then place their orders and make payment electronically via "e-gold", which is a digital currency system backed by real gold. They never received the goods promised. The anonymity of users allowed the internet scammer to hide his tracks.
The culprit then returned to taunt his victims to catch him if they could, after they discovered that they had been cheated.
Two laptops and other computer-related peripherals were seized from the suspect, who will be charged in court later today. If convicted, he faces up to seven years jail and a fine.
A police task force comprising officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division Headquarters and Criminal Investigation Department was set up to to investigate the scam, following seven reports against the culprit for cheating in late October.
In a statement, police advised members of the public to verify the reliability of merchants or individuals when making internet purchases or transactions to prevent like-minded individuals from exploiting modern conveniences to commit crime.

Money are usually never recovered. He'll spend a few years in jail, but still be rich when he gets out.

Yes, that would seem to be the case. If he was smart enough, he would hand it to someone else to help invest so by the time he gets out, he would have even more money. While the rest of us people work our hard a** off till 62, he already made it.

Yup totally agree. Many of us work hard for our money while he just rip it off in a matter of days. Worst still is after he is out, he is still consider a "Hao Han".

What is "Hao Han" ?

Hao Han mean someone who is a "Hero". In this context it would mean that even after he is release, his scam will still be remembered by many and he is still rich

hahaa.. arrogant people are always less intelligent.
Worse, using his own laptop to do the stuffs!
Giving his money to other to re-invest? Most likely whoever he trusted will scam him back by running away with his money and when he comes out, he will be left with nothing!

The police traced the money to the bank account where everyone was depositing their money. Then they question the owner of the bank account, put pressure who then release the info on egold. They then approached egold admin to put in a formal inquiry about the account holder and it was then traced back. There were also emails between him and the owner of the bank accounts so they also traced the IP. Some ips were from internet cafes which have CC tv so got caught as well.

It seem like the world is so small that it is so easy to get caught. But luckily it is easy to trace else he will be enjoying the money he scammed now.

Very stupid fellow, deserved to be caught. Under normal circumstances he might/could have gotten away, unfortunately he chose to issue a challenge to our police. Especially given all the publicity in the print and online media, the police have no choice but to pull out all the stops.
Anyway Singapore so small, easy to get caught. Where you gonna run to? Changi?
