According to this article back in July of this year there are still lots of people who don`t use broadband, but continue with dial up. What do you use, whether through choice, or necessity?

Many Dial-Up Users Don't Want Broadband
(NEW YORK) —A new study suggests that attitude rather than availability may be the key reason why more Americans don't have high-speed Internet access.
The findings from the Pew Internet and American Life Project challenge the argument that broadband providers need to more aggressively roll out supply to meet demand.
Only 14% of dial-up users say they're stuck with the older, slower connection technology because they can't get broadband in their neighborhoods, Pew reported Wednesday.
Thirty-five percent say they're still on dial-up because broadband prices are too high, while another 19% say nothing would persuade them to upgrade. The remainder have other reasons or do not know.
"That suggests that solving the supply problem where there are availability gaps is only going to go so far," said John Horrigan, the study's author. "It's going to have to be a process of getting people more engaged with information technology and demonstrating to people it's worth it for them to make the investment of time and money."
Nonetheless, the Pew study does support concerns that rural Americans have more trouble getting faster Internet connections, which bring greater opportunities to work from home or log into classes at distant universities. Twenty-four% of rural dial-up users say they would get broadband if it becomes available, compared with 11% for suburbanites and 3% for city dwellers.

I could not imagine being stuck on dial up. I am so used to this high speed internet, I often think this is slow. I would definatly not have the patience to deal with websites. So many websites are image intensive, using dial up would just be torture. In the old days when many people had dial up, it was a different story, but since broadband is so popular, websites have been able to make the advance on using new technologies that dial up usersr are suffering on.

Weird. The average connection speed of a user in the States is a little over 8Mb. In Japan, its over 40MB.

dear, I'm one of internet dial-up user. As in developed country like mine, broadband connection is quite expensive to use. So, dial-up connection with speed in Kb/s is worthed enough.

I don't know about that. Here in the UK, you can get a 2MB broadband connection for FREE with £10-20 /month subscription packages & Call plans.
On its own, you can get it for as cheap as £5/month.

Dial-up connection is too slow. You can't do much online with a connection like that. I hope the price of broadband connection will be more affordable in your place soon.

Broad band here. Actually Cable to be exact. I remember when I used Dial-up but that was because it was the only option. Since I got Broadband I have never gone back. Now you can actually break broad band down also into categories ie. DSL, Cable, FIOS, though there are others options like T1 and T3 connections the cost of those tend to limit them to businesses rather than personal use. Even though I am quite happy with my Cable if they ever get FIOS out here on my island I will most likely upgrade. I know several friends with FIOS and have several clients that have a FIOS connection for their businesses. The speed is amazing.

The only people i know that are still on dial up here are people who live on farms, and outside of major centres. They just don't have the option of getting it.
When i moved to the city and got my first dial up connection, i couldn't belive how fast it was.
Now i am surfin and downloadin' up a storm!

I was unfortunate so I had to use dial-up for a few years (back in 2000), but now I can't imagine using it again! It should be.. Banned! Really, I'm not kidding.. I feel terrible for the people still using it.. Loading a simple web page can be a pain in the neck with that!
I hope in the years to follow more and more people will make a switch to broadband and improve their surf times, greatly!

My problem during the time using dial up internet access is not that fast on downloading web pages. That's why I decided to try broadband. When it comes to price broadband may seem more expensive initially, but over the long run it can work out equivalent or even cheaper than some dial-ups plans, depending on your usage.

I prefer Broadband for multiplayer online games and because I use a flat plan of only 15€ at months. With broadband I can download more fast and the navigation is very fast.

Dial up always sucks in speed. Using broadband speeds will never allow you to revert to dial up speeds. We need more and more speeds.
