Last night, son and I decided to take a break from the gore-fests of late to check-out the politically-charged action-drama, V for Vendetta. We got the drink on and popcorn on so let's hit it!
PREVIEWS.
What rerun, retread, remake, re-crap is coming soon? Hey, 2 remakes and 2 sequels, who would have thunk it?
SUPERMAN. Zzzzzzzzzzzzz. Maybe in my 5th life I'll be interested in another Superman re-make.
POSEIDON ADVENTURE. Hey, I bet a ship turns upside-down. YAWN.
X-MEN 3: this one looks pretty wide-open and I'll be seeing it.
FAST AND FURIOUS 3. This one set in Europe. Looks like total
Finally, it's SHOWTIME!
If you are big into George Orwell's classic 1984 novel and know some about the rise of Hitler, you'll immediately recognize this material: oppressive, facist regime with docile citizens and a crusader for freedom. This is set in Great Britain but it could be anywhere. Since the cast is full of Euro's, good choice on Britain:) Don't worry conspiracy-lovers, there are many parallels to the perceived oppression of the neo-cons over in the USA and also a real blowhard TV personality that also happens to be addicted to prescription meds........hello Rush Limbaugh!
The Wachowskis of The Matrix movies did this one. The Matrix didn't do much for me, but V is pretty well-done and every single person in the film has more acting talent than Keenu Reeves, even though that isn't saying a lot

. Cast is good with Natalie Portman(with and then without hair) and John Hurt as the *Highest Chancellor* doing a pretty good Hitler Junior bit. The dude under the mask is Hugo Weaving who has mainly a voice-over role in effect.
If you've seen the previews/ads for this one, the ending isn't a suprise: major stuff blown-up. Along the way, there is a pretty good basic story of how Britain became the only superpower and how that doesn't get Oliver Stone-like in its politics and has some little twists that work well. The supporting cast gets a lot of screen-time and they are pretty good. There is an excellent skit done on the only TV channel allowed that is straight from the Benny Hill Show that provides good laughs. Besides everyone in this funky country being oppressed, gays seem to be the du jour oppressed as they are the focus in 3 sub-plot stories.
With lines like "the people shouldn't fear their government, the government should fear its people," you know this movie is about revolution, baby! Hey, even if you really LIKE your particluar government, every now and then you have to stick it to them and say *FU* anyway to remind them of just who is THE MAN!
At a little more than 2hrs, there is enough time to develop some characters and a story that is more than the basic 1,2,3 template. I give V a

for being entertaining, not overly-preachy with the politics, and a better than average story and cast. The R rating comes from some knife-work and brief nudity of corpses. It's more drama than all-out DIE HARD kind of action, but it certainly has its share of the smack being laid-down with knives, guns and police batons. Check it out.....the theater we were in was packed by quite a well-behaved crowd, not a cell-phone ring the whole time or noise. People were pretty in to it. The unscientific poll conducted by going to the restroom after the movie indicated nothing but praise.
