I don't own any property yet myself but certainly will within the next 5 or so years.

I'm curious though, how many people who frequent this part of the forum own real estate. And if you do, how much of it do you own?

I feel like most people here may be like me and have yet to accrue any real estate for themselves.

I own a few pieces of property. Remember, owning homes or land carry a cost. Not only the mortgage, but the property tax, lawn care etc. Run the numbers before buying anything. There are some great deals out there though.

Hi jawzishere,

I don't own any property myself either. I am a newbie and was just beginning to learn about real estate investing this year. But it began to get a little complicated to me. There is a lot to learn. I also was having trouble finding the niche investing that I wanted to start with. The real estate investing club I'm in kept changing things. It was very hard to keep up.

I think real estate agents who become investors have an advantage because they already know so much about the business in general. They just have to make sure they learn the right investing information in the current market.

I have put real estate investing on the back burner for now, to focus on something that is much easier. I will probably get back to investing sometime in the near future. When YOU do get ready to invest, make sure you learn all the right information.

Take care,

JoAnn

Uncle Awesome: Yea running the numbers over multiple properties seems to be a key factor in being able to invest profitably in real estate.

Angel2006: One real estate niche you may want to consider that I've been exploring recently is condominiums. I just read a great book regarding investing in them over houses and am currently planning on investing in one myself as soon as possible. The book is Make Money With Condominiums and Townhouses by Gary Eldred which is just like $10 on Amazon including shipping. (Tip: You may be able to find a free .pdf version by searching google).

With a niche this specified I feel like it will be a bit easier than focusing on real estate in general and so far have a good base of knowledge just from pouring through that one book.

Realdoub: Cool, what kind of properties and where?

Hello Jawsishere, my name is Lewis White. I am 76 years old and I own my own real estate firm. Over the years I have bought many properties and sold them too. I own my own real estate firm, that is why.

If you keep working you too can own as many real estate properties as I do, it is a very good job. But lately, I haven't been making too much money off of it.

Warmest Regards, Lewis White

I own 13 rental properties, worth between $50-115,000, and there are days when I love being a real estate investor and landlord, and days that I hate it.
For all the challenges though, the bottom line is that in 25 years from now when my tenants have paid off my mortgages I will be the proud owner of a great deal of free and clear rental properties, all of which bring in regular income and never stop. I'll be 53 years old, retired, and unlike most retirees who slowly draw down their retirement funds over their golden years, my income and assets will continue to grow.
By the way, I started with savings of about $60,000 to buy all 13 of those properties, buying mostly shells and renovating them, then refinancing to get my cash back and continuing. Not a bad strategy.
Best of luck to you,

I own 3 rental properties.. They do all right and pay for themselves and any income they make goes into another fund so I can continue buying more property. I remember when I brought my first rental and someone said to me, "It's not a 5 year game its a 20 year plan"

I do not own any real estate property and at present live in a rented house but I would certainly want to own one in Orange County. Can anyone tell me which is the best place to buy one in Orange County? I would definitely want to buy one for me and my family.

Difficult to get the leverage from the banks to do what you did.

But those days are not over forever... The bankers will get greedy and make loans again..

I only own one piece of real estate, which is the apartment that I live in. The plan is to purchase another one soon and rent it out. Still working the numbers, and wont purchase anything until the numbers makes sense.
