Reporting from Washington and Los Angeles— Osama bin Laden, the world's most wanted terrorist, was killed in Pakistan as the result of a U.S. military operation, President Obama announced to the nation Sunday night.

The historic revelation comes about four months before the 10th anniversary of the devastating Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, which were executed by the Al Qaeda network helmed by Bin Laden and prompted the start of a war on terror that has dominated U.S. foreign policy.

Bin Laden, 54, was a member of a wealthy Saudi family and has been on the FBI's Most Wanted Fugitives List since 1999.

Bin Laden broke with Saudi leaders over their beliefs regarding Israel. He was eventually denounced by his family and gave up citizenship.

Al Qaeda has taken responsibility for the bombings of U.S. embassies in 1998 in Tanzania and Kenya. More than 200 people were killed in the attacks.

Al Qaeda has also claimed responsibility for other attacks on other symbols of U.S. power around the globe. It has spawned local organizations in hot spots from Iraq to Afghanistan.

The announcement by Obama from the East Room of the White House came eight years to the day after President Bush announced the end of major combat operations in Iraq, the so-called “Mission Accomplished” speech from the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln.

Members of Congress were briefed on the news by Vice President Joe Biden throughout the weekend, according to a Senate aide.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, related the news to mourners at a memorial service for political consultant Kam Kuwata. Feinstein said Obama was announcing it on TV as she spoke. However, she announced the news well before Obama began to speak.

Time will prove that Bin laden was dead around 4-5 years before by natural disease. US is now finding excuses to get out from Afghanistan with honor. Like 9/11 drama this drama is also fake. US troops are really really great and powerful but only in Hollywood films, not in reality. Otherwise US took 10 years (with all latest technology) to kill one disarmed person (as compare to weapons and technology of US and other troops). Surely Oabam want to get some political benefit and get out from Afghanistan with honor.

If we assume that Obama was responsible was 9/11 (this is not the case) and 3,000+ deaths then who is responsible for more than 1 million deaths in Iraq and more than 1 million deaths in Afghanistan?

This war will not over until greediness of first world countries is not over for natural resources of poor countries.

A forum's about a variety of opinions. I don't agree with what shazshaz wrote, but if that's what he thinks then so be it.

It's all about freedom of expression (as long as forum rules aren't broken of course).

Although bin Laden is dead, I think the terrorist activities from the al-Qaida and other Islamist extremist groups might continue to threaten the world. Maybe someone else would take over bin Laden's position and might continue the attacks.

Not so easy...the extremists lost much power through the war in Afganistan...without this war....we would have many 11.09 around the world...so the batle in Afganistan has reason and must continue on...if You do not kill them there,they will come in your country and kill you..simple as that

bin lauden died in Dec of 2001 of liver failure. He died in a hospital in Abu Dhabi where the CIA
was paying for his care. He was employed by the CIA. There is proof of his death. Madlyn
Albright among other govt. officials are on tape announcing his demise in that year.
Pictures of him showed an ashen white, gaunt, skinny man that looked like he was already dead.
There is also proof that bin lauden was employed by the CIA.
The SEALS that took part in the attack have been killed or are fearing for their lives (and families lives)
if they tell the truth. Three choopers took part in the raid. One was shot down, the other 2 escaped.
The picture of Obama and the other Govt. officials, circulated by the mainstream media ,showing them
watching the raid is another big lie.
Government and the news media do not tell the truth.

Whatever it be, the Documentations and new discoveries will continue but those who have lost their lives will never comeback and the members who still live under shock need to be raised to normal state of life to live with peace and harmony
