Windows Can't Start Up

Hi,
This morning I tried to start up my lap top after putting it to standby last night. But I got the fatal error message and it attempted to reboot.

But it wont. I keep getting a message 'We apologise for the inconvenience but windows did not start successfully.. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

I get the error message even when I select 'start from last know configuration' or even in safe mode.

Has any of you ever had this problem and what did you do to resolve it? I am so worried about losing all my pic, music etc on my hard drive.
