Which is better to monetize, a general or thematic blog? I have mixed feelings about it. With a general blog, you can attract more visitors of various interests. But if you were using the blog to get visitors to your website selling certain products, you would get more targeted visitors with a thematic blog. What do you think?

Yes, you are right that its pretty easy to attract visitor of various interest to your blog having a general content and updates but for me general blogs are for newbies. Those who are expert in a specific field would surely gonna create a thematic blog and after doing a successful promotion he would have far more visitors than a general blog.

Thematic every time. People want to follow a topic, not just chat about any old subject.

A narrow niche blog brings better targeted traffic. You don't just want traffic you want targeted traffic that is very interested in your topic.

From my personal experience, thematic blogs will drive more targeted traffic to your site. I believe that Google will also pick up on the similar content of the theme and rank it higher.

'thematic' traffic of course, you need a niche to market.

I agree with others that a thematic blog with a distinct and interested target audience is best if you can reach that audience.

It is also important to get yourself known widely and a general blog would help in this respect.

I'd go for a general blog since I handle a lot of niche. I practically can talk about anything that I desire and it wouldn't really matter what topic it is as the blog community that we have for it now is really good. There are different kinds of people in it and one thing that I like is that whenever they like our posts, they send it to their friends or bookmark it. Pretty good source of links and traffic if you tell me.

The secret is to identify a niche and then target that niche. A themed blog will attract your target market more quickly than a general one. There's lots of 'waffle' on the web. You don't want yours to be like that.

Become an Amazon Affiliate and post their widget on your site. Include a few books relevant to your site's topic. When visitors click through and make any purchases, you will earn a commission.

There's a huge difference between a niche blog and a micro niche blog. For instance, a niche blog might just be about beauty tips. While micro niche might be for a specific acne cream product (and most if not all posts on site would be about that product). Some successful Amazon affiliates have created micro niche blogs about specific products (or product types such as small electronics item) and monetized with affiliate links. Those sites always rank well as they are keyword and content rich.

I really think the most effective way is to stick with a specific topic. This way your readers will feel more like you're talking directly to them. Your visitors will be more responsive to your call to action.
