As simple as it may sound, I was thinking about this just today - about how much paper I must have saved by now by storing all receipts and other prints in digital format. The free program that I use to do it (which is worth it's weight in gold even though it's not exciting) is PDF995. You can get a copy at download_com. It's literally saved me reams of paper (savin' some trees , and space since I don't need to store it in file cabinets. It's great.

The free software I can't live without are:
For password management, Lastpass - I used to use Roboform but with the free version only allows a certain amount for 'autofill' use and it's information is stored on your computer. When you computer crashes, so does your list of passwords unless you save it on a thumb drive. With Lastpass, it's stored encrypted online and you can access it with multiple computers.
For graphic editing, GIMP.org. Has same capabilities as Photoshop. Great for editing pictures, especially for the latest craze Pinterest.
For lead generation, communication, and desktop sharing - Skype
