SINGAPORE/JAKARTA, Aug 24 (Reuters) - An Indonesian project aimed at saving a vast tract of rainforest has past a milestone seen as a boost in the development of a global market in forest carbon credits.
That market under the U.N.-backed scheme reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation (REDD) could eventually be worth billions of dollars annually and is central to the goal of driving private sector involvement in forest protection.
The Rimba Raya conservation project covers nearly 100,000 ha (250,000 acres) of carbon-rich peat swamp forest in the province of Central Kalimantan on Borneo island. Forests soak up large amounts of carbon dioxide and scientists say curbing deforestation is a key way to fight climate change.
The project has earned the first-ever approval of an accounting method for measuring the reduction in carbon emissions under REDD and is being developed by InfiniteEARTH, with funding from Shell (RDSa.L), Gazprom Market and Trading (GAZP.MM) and the Clinton Foundation.
The Voluntary Carbon Standard programme, the most respected standard for voluntary carbon offsets, approved the methodology after it passed a mandated double auditing process.
The project itself is now undergoing third-party validation and is likely to become the world's first VCS-approved REDD project later this year, Gazprom and InfiniteEARTH say.
The step is a boost for other REDD projects and investors wanting certainty on the quality of REDD carbon credits. There are several dozen REDD projects globally, including more than a dozen in Indonesia at various stages of development.
"This is seen as a landmark moment for the carbon market," Gazprom said in a statement. "Historically REDD projects have suffered due to their exclusion from the Kyoto Protocol," it said, as well as the absence of a recognised global standard.
The project is expected to reduce 18.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from being emitted in the first 10 years and up to 75 million tonnes in the 30-year life of the project.
At about $10 a credit, that means about $750 million over 30 years.
LIVELIHOODS
The future sale of carbon offsets from the project will help boost the livelihoods of more than 11,000 people in the area and save rare species including orang-utans and other primates, the statement says.
REDD aims to reward developing countries that save, protect and rehabilitate forests through large-scale projects. Poorer nations and local forest communities are meant to take a major share of the sale of the carbon credits to rich nations, which can use them to meet mandated emission reduction targets.
REDD is not yet formally part of a broader U.N. climate pact and potential buyers of the credits have been waiting for an approved global standard for forest CO2 credits to ensure the reductions are real and verifiable.
"The methodology was designed for conservation projects that avoid planned land-use conversion in tropical peat swamp forests in Southeast Asia," the statement said.
The project itself borders Tanjung Puting national park and the area has been under growing threat from encroaching palm oil plantations.

What a fantastic amount of growth CCN is currently experiencing. WE have had over a 100% increase in membership over the last 4 weeks. At this rate we expect to easily break through the 5000 membership mark by end of April 2011. It is envisaged that CCN will grow to over 200,000 members by the end of 2011, which will be just in time for the UNFCC approval of REDD initiatives internationally.
To help achieve the 200,000 member milestone, CCN are working on the following initiatives:
Firstly, the translation of the CCN website and membership areas into a total of 15 languages over a 4 months phased rollout.
In our first phase we will be translating the new CCN presentation and a refined version of the CCN website into Spanish, French, Italian, Bahasa Malaysia, Bahasa Indonesia, and the Croatia/Serbia/Bosnia/Macedonian languages. We expect to have the new site up by 21st of February, 2011 beginning with the latest translations of the CCN presentations.

With these combined languages CCN will be able to reach billions of people throughout the world so that everyone can really get behind supporting and saving our world’s rainforests.

CCN President Erminio Kotlar is now in Indonesia working with our newest CCN Entrepreneurs who are quickly joining the business in support of the Rimba Conservation Project. The two CCN hotspots quickly attracting people are Bali and Jakarta.

There is a LOT of information out there showing that the whole carbon trading scheme is a scam, and that the information we were fed from the so called "climate scientists" was full of lies, manipulations and orchestrated deception, meant to further other agenda's, in the guise of "protecting the environment" etc. So, there is a LOT of questions about if this is good for us, or a total fraud, meant to benefit the corporations that are destroying our planet, while fooling the people to enter into a very very bad deal for everyone. Welcome to all CCN Members, we would like to say a WOW! What another great month March was with CCN growing more across Europe, Asia and with Australia really starting to boom!
We have some exciting updates to share with everyone today that will really help drive our growth in this month of April.
Payment Processing
It is the 100% clear intention of the CCN Management to ensure that there are multiple ways provided for persons to be able to pay to purchase products through CCN. As you will read below you will see that as of April there will be several payment processors supporting the growth of our CCN business worldwide.
ALERT PAY – is fully integrated with the CCN Platform. You can pay using your Debit Card or Credit Card online via Alert Pay. For those you prefer to not use credit cards online, you can setup an account with www.alertpay.com and then load that account via one of their associated local banks. This can be done very affordably, just remember to add on an additional 2.5% to cover the administration fees charged by paying online with Alertpay.
TOWAH – www.towah.com is a very popular payment provider with a large customer base in northern Europe. CCN will be able to accept payments from other establish Towah account holders in the coming 10 days. So keep a look out for this when making your selection for payment methods or account loading.
EZYBONDS – CCN has already integrated the option for members to be able to open an Ezybond account online via CCN. To do this you need to click on the Accounts tab in your membership area and then select Ezybonds. You will have the option to then setup an account with Ezybonds directly. It is expected that full Ezybonds integration to the CCN Shopping Cart will be finalised within the coming 2 weeks.
Debit Card Progress
We apologise for the delays in the announcing of the official launch of the CCN Debit MasterCard program. We are still waiting on the final confirmation from Ezybonds on the use of this platform over other platforms that are being now put forward as an option for faster and more affordable processing. We will be able to make an official announcement on this by late next week it is expected.
Certificates for Carbon Credits
Due to the concentrated effort on implementing payment systems the delivery of our certification process has fallen behind. We have been informed by our IT Department that they are committed to ensuring that by close of business Friday 8th of April, CCN members will be able to access the new RIMBA Conservation Mapping system and elect to forward redeem any Carbon Credits that they have purchased.
Maintenance Postponed till May 1st
Given that members can now pay with their Credit Cards and will also have several other options to remit funds to CCN our monthly maintenance program will be implemented during the month of May. Thereby all members will need to ensure that during the month of May and every month thereafter they have purchased additional Carbon Credits or even made sales to qualify for Multi-Match and Matching bonuses.

We are expecting in the month of April to have loaded Spanish, Indonesian Bahasa, Malaysia Bahasa and some of the Italian to our new language site. In May we are aiming for the full Italian, Croatian, Slovenian, Slovak and Dutch languages. This will coincide with a tour of Europe being planned for late May by CCN. More details will be announced in the later part of this month on the European Tour.
CCN Carbon Footprint Calculator
Have you used our recently launched Carbon Footprint Calculator? If not please give it a go.
In the coming weeks the CCN Team are working on the further development of this Carbon Footprint Calculator. We will also be developing a calculator for small businesses to use to be able to work out how much carbon they create and should be offsetting. This will be a great tool for all CCN Members to use when promoting to business people.
The CCN Carbon Footprint Calculator will also be a major focus in the CCN new corporate retail website being developed.
OVER THE COMING WEEKS there are going to be a number of announcements and latest news releases so be sure to stay active and regularly log into your CCN Member’s Area. If you have not done so already, we also encourage you to join the CCN Blog site -http://carboncentralnetwork.ning.com.
CCN’s Elisa Berno has setup an Italian Group and is available online on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s to take questions from CCN Italian members via the Chat service provided.
