DFAT upgrades travel advisory for Thailand

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has upgraded its travel advisory for Thailand
, warning Australians to reconsider their need to travel to the country.

The advisory says that due to the apparent military-led takeover, Australians should reconsider
visiting Thailand and those already in the country should exercise caution.

It says that demonstrations and political rallies in Thailand have the potential to turn violent.

DFAT is also warning Australian travellers intending to travel through Bangkok Airport to check
with their airlines before starting their journey.

The chairman of the Australia-Thailand Institute, Tim Fischer, is urging Australians to consider the
advisory.

"I've noticed they've posted closure and shut down for a lot of the key institutions of Thailand,
including the stock exchange," he said.

"Obviously [it's] necessary to follow the advisories of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
and monitor events best done from the safety of their apartments until further advice issues.

"It's happening and unfolding very quickly. I've spoken to one other contact at this stage and
so far it's been peaceful.

"Thailand and Bangkok have been in a stalemate with regard to elections this year and obviously
that has been one of the factors."
